Position Summary

The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student’s field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:Reporting to the Senior Director of First Year Student Engagement and Experience, this position primarily supports special projects for the Division of Student Success.

RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to):Divisional Support: Support varied efforts by the Senior Director that are tied to broader, divisional programs and projects. Topics are varied. Potential duties include:

  • Assist with Spartans Thrive and Wellness Takeover Day program planning, implementation, and assessment
  • Special events, team-building, recognition/awards
    • Assist in planning by way of ordering supplies, day-of program set up and attendance, facilitating sign-up or nomination processes, etc.
  • Bi-monthly divisional newsletter
    • Send reminders about deadlines
    • Compile graphics submitted by departmental representatives as well as create original content
    • Schedule the newsletter to go out on predetermined dates/times
  • Social media
    • Manage the Division of Student Success Instagram account
    • Create original content as needed through platforms such as Canva, emma, and Constant Contact
    • Attend events/capture divisional efforts to post to divisional social media
    • Assist with promoting university-wide social media campaigns such as Rawkin’ Welcome Weeks, National Transfer Student Week, Homecoming, Believe in the G, etc.
  • Research and Writing
    • Oftentimes, special projects require investigation into local data, national trends, benchmarking, etc.
    • Executive summaries of research projects, proposals, and reports
  • First year student program supplemental support for key events, such as SOAR and NAV1GATE
Additional New Student Transitions & First Year Experience InitiativesAll NST & FYE staff provide support for departmental programs and services, regardless of the specific functions of each job

  • Assist with all NST & FYE major events, such as but not limited to NAV1GATE, SOAR, Rawkin’ Welcome Weeks; includes day-of event support
  • Represent the department at a number of University events, including Admissions Open Houses and Admitted Student programs.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and trainings.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned

Qualifications

  • Admission to a graduate program at UNC Greensboro is required.
  • Quality written and oral communication skills are required.
  • Preference is given to candidates with marketing, communications, and/or social media experience, attention to details and deadlines, as well as experience in program planning, and assessment.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • 10 month contract with preferred start date of August 2026
  • 20 hours per week during fall and spring semesters for a remuneration of a $15,000 stipend, with the opportunity to continue work over the summer for additional compensation.
  • Professional development funds may be available in support of departmental needs.
  • Graduate assistants are entitled to student holidays. However, due to the nature of orientation/transition programs, often occurring during breaks, Graduate Assistants will be required at times to return early or leave late for such breaks. Individual accommodations may be made for each break with the direct supervisor.
  • Graduate Assistant employment is contingent upon available funding and resources.

Minimum Qualifications

To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:

  • Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
  • Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
  • Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
  • Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.
