General Summary Of Position

The University of Massachusetts Lowell is seeking an Assistant Teaching Professor to join the faculty of the School of Criminology and Justice Studies (SCJS). The area of expertise is open, but candidates who can teach research methods courses will receive enhanced consideration. Successful applicants will have completed a Ph.D. in criminology, criminal justice, or a related field, with a record of high-quality teaching and the ability to engage in significant service to our students. The start date for the position is September 2026. The position will remain open until filled.

The SCJS is housed within the University’s College of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (FAHSS). The College is the largest unit of the University, with 12 academic departments and over 220 full-time faculty. FAHSS has experienced significant growth in recent years, including hiring over 50 new faculty members, achieving a 70% growth in funded research expenditures, and the addition of several new interdisciplinary graduate programs.

The SCJS enrolls 700 undergraduates who major in Criminal Justice, with an additional 400 Criminal Justice master’s students, and 45 doctoral students. The School offers an undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Science) in criminal justice, a master’s degree in criminal justice (Master of Arts), a master’s degree in security studies (Master of Arts or Master of Science), five graduate certificate programs, and a doctoral degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice. Our nationally ranked Ph.D. program has two tracks: Track 1 - Criminology and Criminal Justice and Track 2 - Criminology and Criminal Justice with a concentration in the study of terrorism.

The SCJS currently has 19 tenure track faculty members, 3 full-time teaching professors, and over 20 adjunct faculty members. Faculty members specialize in a wide range of scholarly topic areas, including victimology, policing, institutional and community corrections, terrorism, violence, the classification, treatment and control of sex offenders, substance abuse, criminal justice technology, and a variety of global justice issues. Faculty members have expertise in quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research, with a high level of scholarly output. Externally funded research by the SCJS faculty is currently supported by several million dollars in grants from major funding agencies. The School’s faculty collaborate with local, state, and federal criminal justice agencies, while also working in partnership with other faculty and organizations globally. Additionally, the SCJS is home to three high profile academic journals: Victims & Offenders, Democracy & Security, and Perspectives on Terrorism.

Minimum Qualifications (Required), All Candidates

  • Completed Ph.D. degree in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or closely related social science field, with a clear focus on criminal justice topics.
  • Ability to teach substantive courses in criminal justice and criminology.
  • Ability to engage in significant service-related activities for out students, the School, and the University.

This is a benefited, Massachusetts Society of Professors/MTA/NEA union position. Salary range of $75,000 - $90,000, based on Assistant Teaching Professor rank and qualifications.
