In cooperation with other Student Affairs staff members, the Assistant Director provides guidance and support through mentorship, departmental training(s), and direct advising support to our highly engaged student organizations. In particular, the Assistant Director will support student organizations that enhance a sense of belonging for students on Kenyon’s campus. This is an eleven (11) month position, with full benefits, and includes regular evening and weekend responsibilities.

The Scope Of The Associate Director’s Responsibilities Includes

  • Greek Life support Departmental campus programming initiatives Advisor development WKCO 91.9 FM student-managed radio station The Horn Gallery live music and art venue advising Horn Gallery Sound Technician student worker program Sophomore, Junior, and Senior class committee advising General student organization support Co-supervision of student intern staff

Greek Life Support (30%)

  • Provide leadership development/training opportunities based on core competencies and best practices to 9 registered Greek Life organizations and student leaders. Develop, implement, and assess a Greek Standards Program. Assist in the development and coordination of hazing prevention programs and workshops as well as other risk management topics with various departments. Advise Greek Life committees such as Fraternity and Sorority councils. Liaise with Greek Life advisors and national organizations. Advise and support the presidents/leaders of fraternities and sororities through monthly/bimonthly meetings. These meetings will allow for guidance and support on compliance with college policies and standards, organization and member development, student organization expectations and policies, budgets and purchasing, risk management, recruitment and retention, event planning and marketing, philanthropy/service, and overall leadership development. Organize and support programming, new member recruitment, and education programs for Greek organizations. Provide administrative duties including but not limited to GPA and requirement checks for prospective and active members, roster collection and maintenance, collection of dues, using our student engagement platform, KCon. Liaise with various departments on education, prevention, and conduct for local fraternities and sororities. Supervise Greek Life intern in Student Engagement Collaborate with the Advancement Division on Greek Life related initiatives.

Campus Programming Initiatives (30%):

  • Along with the Director of Student Engagement, facilitate the development and implementation of a pre-orientation leadership program for new students in coordination with the First Year Experience, Residence Life, and other campus partners. Be the primary point of contact and support person for large campus programming initiatives such as Involvement Fair, Orientation Kick-Off, Homecoming, Late Nite Bites, Hype Events (Departmental Programming), Gundies (Student Leadership Awards), and Senior Week. Oversee the implementation and evaluation of the Weaver Wednesday mini grant which provides funding and event planning support for student organizations and departments. Develop a campus-wide advertising campaign to promote large-scale events.

Student Organization Support and Administration (30%) Advise WKCO FM 91.9 Radio Free Kenyon and The Horn Gallery Advise the Senior Class Committee of Student Council by providing assistance in regular operations and large, traditional campus programming such as Senior Soiree, Fandango, and Senior Week. Advise the Sophomore & Junior Class Committee(s) of Student Council by providing assistance in regular operations and large, traditional campus programming. Management of the Horn Gallery sound technicians including hiring, training, scheduling, and supervising both programs providing audio support for Horn Gallery shows. Meet individually with students to discuss their leadership skill development, set goals, offer guidance, and facilitate reflection on their progress.

  • Develop, organize, and orchestrate Advisor training/support for registered student organizations; including, but not limited to:
    • Ensure operations meet College and external reporting standards, such as advisors attending all required college sanctioned training including requirements through the Clery Act and Office of Civil Rights. Confirmation of advisors every academic semester for the Office of Student Engagement. Perform outreach to Kenyon employees to solicit interest in becoming a student organization advisor Assist both new and current registered student organizations with advisor identification and selection. Coordinate Advisor appreciation on behalf of the Office of Student Engagement.
    • Provide direction in the coordination and scheduling of co-curricular student programs including assisting student leaders with fiscal management, contract negotiation, and logistical coordination particularly for Horn Gallery and WKCO. Ensure operations meet College and external reporting standards, such as FCC compliance. Inventory and purchase equipment for the operational needs of these student organizations.
Other Responsibilities (10%)

  • Hire, train, and supervise one or more student interns on work ranging from general office assistance to long-term special projects. Partner with campus offices as appropriate, such as the Offices of Student Rights and Responsibilities, Civil Rights & Title IX, Residential Life, Community Partnerships,, and Academic Affairs. Participate in activities, meetings, and events as a member of the Division of Student Affairs. Serve on campus committees as requested. Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Work is generally performed in an office environment but may also require being able to navigate between and within campus facilities including up and down stairs and being outside in various weather conditions. Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet campus requirements to drive campus vehicles. Ability to lift and carry 20 lbs. regularly and move tables, chairs, and other furniture. Evening and weekend work is frequent and required.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, or a related field preferred; Bachelor’s degree required. Two to four years of graduate or professional experience in higher education is required; Greek Life and programming experience preferred. Committed to and familiar with the values and needs of a small, private, residential liberal arts college. Demonstrated cultural competency and commitment to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and an understanding of the unique intersections of identity and the student experience. Strong sense of organizational and administrative skills. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated interest in working with and mentoring college students.
