The Assistant Director of Student and Community Engagement acts as a key architect for the campus experience, cultivating an environment where every student can find a place to belong and lead. This role oversees the heartbeat of student life-from long-standing campus traditions and athletic spirit to the management of over 100 student organizations-to build a student-ready culture where students are known, supported, and challenged. By creating spaces for connection and hands-on leadership, the Assistant Director helps students develop the interpersonal strengths and resilience needed to thrive both on campus and in their future professional life.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Advise Campus Activities Board (CAB), the student programming board, and oversee major campus programming like Back to Cap Week and Homecoming; provide support for weekly late afternoon, evening, and weekend activities.
- Oversee support for 100 student organizations, including training, events, budgets, and operations within Engage. Coordinate major engagement initiatives, manage organization records and processes, and collaborate across campus partners to enhance student involvement, space usage, and peer-to-peer connections.
- Cultivates, assesses, and enhances existing campus traditions while designing new mission-centered experiences that reinforce community and student belonging, strengthen institutional identity, advance the university's mission, and align with strategic plan priorities.
- Collaborates closely with Athletics to design and implement initiatives that strengthen campus pride, expand student participation at athletic events, and cultivate a vibrant, connected campus community.
- Manage Stall Talk creation and distribution process. Supervise stall talk intern.
- Facilities Management - Supervise the Harry C. Moores Student Union Student Receptionists and Building Managers including recruiting, hiring, and training students. Serve as point person for Facilities. Create support structure for events booked through Meeting and Event Services to ensure high quality delivery.
- Participate as a member of institutional student success committee.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree (M. A.) or equivalent preferred; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to understand, communicate with and effectively interact with people across cultures. Possesses a positive attitude towards cultural differences. Willing to gain knowledge of different cultural practices and world views and determine how those practices and views will factor in during investigations, complaints, reports, findings, etc.
- To perform this job successfully, an individual should have excellent skills in the Microsoft suite of products, inDesign, Canva, and social media platforms.
- Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to effectively present information to a wide range of constituents. Ability to facilitate discussion groups and workshops; ability to coordinate events; ability to update and maintain social media presence and organizational listservs.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- This position requires the ability and/or skill to: work closely and professionally with others as part of a team, be flexible, pay attention to detail, work without supervision and demonstrate considerable initiative, communicate professionally through both verbal and written means, work well with individuals from diverse backgrounds, manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines, establish departmental goals and priorities, contribute to Capital University's mission and vision.
