Primary Purpose Of The Organizational Unit:

The Office of Intercultural Engagement, a part of the Division of Student Affairs, supports our diverse student population in achieving their academic goals by promoting student success through culturally rich experiences and affinity-focused support. OIE provides opportunities for student-centered community building, leadership development, intergroup dialogues, and cross-cultural engagements that prepare students for success in a diverse global society.

Position Summary:

The Assistant Director is part of a team of collegial and dedicated student affairs professionals who work together to engage all UNCG students in inter, intra, and cross-cultural learning and intercultural competency building. The Assistant Director, reporting to the Director of the Office of Intercultural Engagement (OIE), will apply their skills, experience, and knowledge to advance initiatives that include an intergroup dialogue program and programs that center on belonging and academic success. The Assistant Director will work closely with the director and assigned academic areas to build strategic programming and key relationships.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree plus two years of experience or relevant Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated awareness of current theory and practice focused on issues related to postsecondary education.
  • Experience and proven ability in developing, implementing, and assessing successful programs and initiatives directly related to this position with a diverse college-age population in a higher education setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One or more years, post ­Master’s degree, of directly related experience in Student Affairs, including direct experience with intercultural programs, services, and events.
  • Demonstrated success working effectively with students from varied backgrounds and experiences.
  • Proven understanding and ability to foster a welcoming and respectful environment that supports cross-cultural engagement in a University setting.
  • Demonstrated integrity, initiative, dependability, openness, teamwork, and a positive attitude
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Proven ability to address the needs of students.

Student Support

Essential Tasks:

  • Work with students to advise, mentor, educate, and support their success as students and graduates as active participants in society.
  • This includes year-round support for students who serve as camp counselors and mentors in the annual UNCG CHANCE summer camp, as well as students who participated as campers.
  • Support includes direct advising, mentoring, and referrals to other campus resources.
  • This also includes coordinating the Spartans in Dialogue program, which includes organizing facilitator trainings and offering dialogue groups that students can participate in.

Essential Tasks:

  • Guide, advise, and collaborate with current student groups that provide education and community on Hispanic cultures.
  • Help student groups find common ground to create a centralized, efficient, and welcoming learning environment where all students can be academically successful.

  • Supervise a graduate assistant who will be tasked with supporting the mission of the office.

Essential Tasks:

  • Plan, implement, manage budgets, and effectively assess programming areas.
  • This includes Hispanic Heritage Month planning, coordinating with other offices, and managing its annual programming budget.
  • This also includes the Herencia Collective, planning and implementing annual welcome events, resource fairs, and cultural celebrations.
