Innovative Technologies Corporation (ITC) is seeking three (3) Technical Writers to support a proposal for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) research communications and publications program.
Work may be performed from the FHWA office in McLean, Virginia, a Washington, DC office, or another designated office, depending on Government requirements.
The Technical Writers will research, develop, and refine magazine features, technical reports, manuals, newsletters, and other research communications. These professionals will work with engineers, researchers, and other subject matter experts to translate complex technical information into clear, accurate, and accessible content for technical and public audiences.
Clearance and Suitability
None. This is an unclassified position. The selected candidate must be able to successfully complete any required USDOT suitability processing and obtain a Government-issued Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credential if required for facility or system access.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, English, Communications, Journalism, or a related scientific or technical field.
- At least 5 years of professional experience in technical writing, editing, or publishing.
- Demonstrated experience researching and writing original technical content.
- Experience interviewing technical subject matter experts and translating complex information for varied audiences.
- Experience managing documents or articles through multiple review and revision cycles.
- Knowledge of major editorial style guides, including the GPO Style Manual and Chicago Manual of Style.
- Experience supporting Section 508 accessibility, reference checking, fact checking, or copyright and permission requirements.
- Superior command of English grammar, punctuation, organization, and written communication.
Desired Qualifications
- Advanced degree or specialized training in editorial standards, technical communication, or transportation research.
- Transportation experience, particularly highway or surface transportation research.
- Experience supporting Federal technical publications, scientific communications, or engineering documentation.
- Experience integrating tables, figures, schematics, and data into narrative content.
- Experience with print and electronic publication workflows.
Key Responsibilities
- Research and write original content for magazines, newsletters, user manuals, technical reports, and research documents.
- Interview engineers, researchers, developers, and other subject matter experts to develop accurate content.
- Translate raw data, engineering terminology, and complex research into clear narratives for technical and public audiences.
- Develop outlines, feature articles, guest editorials, summaries, and other communication products.
- Revise and rewrite material to improve logical flow, organization, readability, and clarity.
- Perform fact checking, reference checking, data verification, and content quality assurance.
- Ensure content follows applicable style, accessibility, copyright, and permission requirements.
- Manage assigned documents through multiple review cycles and final publication.

Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this contingent-hire position is $76,000-$84,000, based on qualifications and experience. ITC offers medical, dental, and vision benefits; 10 days of paid time off; 7 days of sick leave; and other available company benefits.
This is a contingent position for a proposal ITC is bidding on. ITC anticipates contract award before January 1, 2027. Published July 30, 2026. Additional information will be provided during the interview process.
