Innovative Technologies Corporation (ITC) is seeking a Senior Technical Editor to support a proposal for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) research communications, publications, and web content program.
Work may be performed from the FHWA office in McLean, Virginia, a Washington, DC office, or another designated office, depending on Government requirements.
The Senior Technical Editor will oversee the editorial process for high-stakes technical documentation, ensure consistency across a large publication portfolio, mentor editorial staff, and transform complex technical information into authoritative, accurate, and accessible products that comply with Federal editorial and publishing requirements.
Clearance and Suitability
None. This is an unclassified position. The selected candidate must be able to successfully complete any required USDOT suitability processing and obtain a Government-issued Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credential if required for facility or system access.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in English, Journalism, or a technical field.
- At least 10 years of progressively responsible technical editing experience.
- Supervisory and project management experience.
- Expert-level command of the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) Style Manual.
- Experience performing substantive editing and verifying technical accuracy.
- Experience with reference checking, fact checking, copyright compliance, and quality control.
- Ability to independently manage the full document lifecycle from outline through final print, online, or web publication.
Desired Qualifications
- Transportation experience, particularly highway or surface transportation.
- Experience supporting Federal technical publications or research communications programs.
- Experience mentoring junior editors, writers, or publication staff.
- Familiarity with Section 508 accessibility and digital publishing requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the editorial process for complex and high-visibility technical publications.
- Perform and supervise substantive editing, copyediting, proofreading, and quality assurance.
- Ensure stylistic consistency and compliance with the GPO Style Manual and applicable agency style guidance.
- Verify technical accuracy, references, facts, data, and copyright permissions.
- Transform raw data, engineering terminology, and complex source material into clear, authoritative documents.
- Manage documents through the complete lifecycle from outline and draft development through final print, online, or web publication.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior editors and writers.
- Coordinate with researchers, technical subject matter experts, authors, and Government stakeholders.

Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this contingent-hire position is $98,000-$106,000, based on qualifications and experience. ITC offers medical, dental, and vision benefits; 10 days of paid time off; 7 days of sick leave; and other available company benefits.
This is a contingent position for a proposal ITC is bidding on. ITC anticipates contract award before January 1, 2027. Published July 30, 2026. Additional information will be provided during the interview process.
