Tailings & Water Operations Engineer (RTWOE)
We are recruiting on behalf of a leading mining operation for an experienced Tailings and Water Operations Engineer to oversee tailings storage facilities (TSFs) and associated water management systems across active and legacy sites.
This role is accountable for ensuring the integrity, safety, compliance, and long-term risk management of tailings and water infrastructure. It is a field-intensive position requiring strong on-site presence and collaboration with operational, technical, and corporate teams.
Key Responsibilities:
Tailings and Water Management
- Act as the Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer, ensuring the stability and integrity of TSFs
- Oversee tailings deposition and water management strategies, including storage, removal, and reclamation
- Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies for geotechnical and hydrological risks
- Review and challenge Engineer of Record (EoR) recommendations in line with global tailings standards
- Develop and maintain Emergency Response Plans and OMS (Operations, Maintenance & Surveillance) Manuals
- Oversee monitoring systems, instrumentation planning, and data analysis including QA/QC processes
Compliance and Governance
- Ensure compliance with international standards and regulatory requirements (e.g. ICMM, GISTM, ISO standards)
- Collaborate with corporate technical teams and site leadership to maintain strong governance practices
- Participate in third-party inspections, audits, and technical reviews
- Ensure implementation of audit findings and continuous improvement actions
- Support emergency preparedness and crisis response planning
- Track and report KPIs related to tailings and water management performance
Technical Oversight
- Provide technical review of TSF and water system projects delivered internally or by external consultants
- Support long-term risk management strategies including closure planning and climate resilience
- Utilise advanced modelling tools to assess water balance, storage, and system performance
- Drive continuous improvement across tailings and water management practices
Training & Development
- Develop and deliver structured training programmes for operators and engineering teams
- Support succession planning and mentoring of junior engineers
- Contribute to internal knowledge sharing and industry best practice initiatives
Requirements:
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in tailings and/or water management within a mining or heavy industrial environment
- Strong technical expertise in geotechnical engineering, hydrology, and TSF stability
- Experience working within regulatory and governance frameworks
- Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to work in a field-based, operational environment
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D
- Knowledge of water modelling tools (e.g. HEC-RAS, GoldSim) advantageous
- Experience with tailings modelling software (e.g. Muk3D) desirable
Education & Certifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining, Civil, Geotechnical, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) required
- Professional Engineer (PE) status required or to be obtained within a defined timeframe

Salary : $90,000 - $130,000
