Role Summary
The Mainframe Technical Lead analyzes, designs, and drives end-to-end solution delivery for enterprise-level IBM Mainframe applications. The role centers on deep COBOL, JCL, DB2, and CICS expertise spanning both batch and online processing environments. The lead collaborates cross-functionally with business analysts and stakeholders to refine requirements, conduct impact assessments, and translate technical findings into actionable business rules. Additionally, this individual mentors team members, supports mainframe migration initiatives, and champions process improvements through modern tooling and emerging technologies.
🧩 Key Responsibilities
- Solution Design & Development
- Analyze, design, develop, document, and deliver mainframe application solutions using COBOL, JCL, DB2, and CICS.
- Requirements & Impact Analysis
- Perform requirement analysis, design reviews, and code enhancements; conduct impact assessments and translate technical findings into business rules and process flow diagrams.
- Stakeholder Collaboration
- Partner with business analysts and stakeholders to gather, refine, and validate requirements across multi-vendor environments.
- Mainframe Migration
- Participate in and contribute to mainframe migration and modernization exercises.
- Documentation & Audit Support
- Produce technical documentation and provide support during audit activities.
- Mentorship & Process Improvement
- Mentor junior and mid-level team members and drive process improvements leveraging modern tools and emerging technologies.
- API & Integration Awareness
- Apply knowledge of API integration, microservices concepts, and IBM MQ / IBM DataPower where applicable to bridge mainframe and modern systems.

Technical Skills
- Core Mainframe Languages: COBOL, JCL, CICS, REXX
- Databases & Query: DB2, IMS DB, SQL
- Utilities: SORT, IDCAMS, ISPF
- Tools & Schedulers: Endevor, Topaz, Control-M (or equivalent job scheduler)
- Integration & Middleware: IBM MQ, IBM DataPower, API Integration, Microservices concepts
- Methodologies: SDLC, Agile
Soft Skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with proven impact-analysis capability
- Excellent verbal and written communication for stakeholder and cross-team collaboration
- Ability to produce clear technical documentation and support audit processes
- Mentorship and leadership aptitude to guide team members
🎓 Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (required)
- 12 years of hands-on IBM Mainframe development and technical lead experience
- Demonstrated experience with mainframe migration and/or modernization initiatives (preferred)
