What are the responsibilities and job description for the System Engineer Robotics position at Impax Recruitment?
Robotics Systems Engineer
NY Hybrid
Compensation: Up to $200,000 base competitive equity
We’re partnering with a venture-backed defence technology company building a next-generation maritime sensing platform deployed globally across distributed autonomous systems. The team is tackling problems at the intersection of robotics, edge AI, satellite communications, and large-scale sensing infrastructure, delivering capabilities that do not currently exist anywhere else at operational scale.
They are looking for a Robotics Systems Engineer with 4 years of experience to help scale a multimodal edge sensing platform operating in harsh maritime environments. This is a high-ownership role suited to someone who thrives in ambiguity, moves quickly, and has experience shipping reliable production systems, not just prototypes.
You’ll join a lean, mission-driven engineering organisation where the work is highly visible, technically demanding, and directly tied to real-world operations.
What You’ll Do
* Own the reliability, stability, and scalability of the robotics middleware stack across deployed field systems.
* Reduce technical debt through targeted architectural improvements and rewrites while maintaining backwards compatibility with already deployed hardware.
* Build and maintain ROS2-based middleware utilities orchestrating multimodal sensor systems including:
* Radar
* Cameras, including thermal and infrared
* SDR
* IMU
* GPS
* Acoustic sensors
* LiDAR
* Develop software running on NVIDIA Jetson edge hardware operating in bandwidth-constrained and environmentally harsh maritime conditions.
* Optimise data transmission over satellite networks, including compression, prioritisation, buffering, and recovery strategies.
* Contribute to edge-to-cloud delivery pipelines feeding downstream AWS-based intelligence and analytics systems.
* Build diagnostics tooling, automated validation frameworks, and deployment health monitoring for long-duration unattended systems.
* Participate in operational support and on-call rotation for deployed assets.
* Collaborate closely with AI, platform, and backend engineering teams to define shared interfaces, observability tooling, and system abstractions.
What They’re Looking For
* 4 years of experience in robotics, distributed systems, embedded systems, or edge infrastructure engineering.
* Strong production experience with ROS2 in real-world deployed environments.
* Proficiency in Python and/or C .
* Strong Linux systems engineering experience.
* Experience working with edge compute platforms such as NVIDIA Jetson.
* Familiarity with multimodal sensor integration and synchronisation.
* Experience building systems that must tolerate unreliable connectivity, constrained bandwidth, or remote deployments.
* Strong debugging and systems-thinking skills across hardware and software boundaries.
* Comfortable owning ambiguous technical problems end-to-end with minimal oversight.
* Experience shipping production-grade systems at scale.
Nice to Have
* Maritime, aerospace, defence, or autonomous systems experience.
* Experience with satellite networking or Starlink-based deployments.
* Familiarity with SDR, radar, sensor fusion, or edge ML inference pipelines.
* AWS infrastructure and cloud data pipeline experience.
* Observability and telemetry tooling experience for distributed robotics systems.
