Medical Laboratory Scientist II – Transfusion Medicine

Location: Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Job Type: Permanent, Direct hire

Schedule: Friday–Monday, 9:30 PM–7:30 AM

Hours: 40 hours/week

Pay Range: $26.85–$45.04/hour, based on experience, pay band, and internal equity

Sign-On Bonus: $10,000 commitment incentive, paid in four installments over two years

Job Summary

The Medical Laboratory Scientist II performs a variety of patient testing and administrative tasks in support of clinical activities at Chapel Hill, North Carolinah. The position requires advanced laboratory competencies, independent problem-solving, and the ability to perform and evaluate complex laboratory testing, particularly within Transfusion Medicine/Blood Bank.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform accurate laboratory testing at an advanced competency level, including testing within CLIA requirements.
  • Investigate and resolve issues involving laboratory equipment, test results, specimens, and workflow.
  • Work independently while applying strong laboratory knowledge and technical skills.
  • Evaluate laboratory testing requests for appropriateness and use critical decision-making skills to determine diagnostic testing needs.
  • Perform blood bank/transfusion medicine testing, including:
  • Type and Screen
  • Antibody Identification
  • Direct Antiglobulin Test (DAT)
  • Eluate testing
  • Phenotyping
  • Antigen typing
  • Perform product modifications, including syringe aliquots and irradiation.
  • Follow transfusion protocols, including Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP) and emergency release procedures.
  • Perform quality control and proficiency testing and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory testing.
  • Prepare reagents and assist with preparation of standard and control materials.
  • Monitor reagent levels and assist with maintaining laboratory supplies.
  • Serve as a technical resource to other laboratory staff.
  • Participate in teams, special projects, and assigned departmental initiatives.
  • Assist with teaching and training various learners and new employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required QualificationsEducation

One of the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science, or
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical or Biological Science, or
  • Associate's degree in Clinical/Medical Laboratory Technology.
Certification & Experience

For Associate's degree holders:

  • MLT (ASCP) or MLT (AMT) certification, plus 2 years of experience.

For Bachelor's degree holders in Chemical or Biological Science:

  • ASCP categorical certification in the applicable specialty area, plus 2 years of experience.

For Bachelor's degree holders in Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science:

  • MT/MLS (ASCP) or MT/MLS (AMT) certification. No experience required according to the requisition.
Preferred/Required Blood Bank Experience

Candidates should have hands-on blood bank testing experience, including:

  • Type and Screen
  • Antibody Identification
  • DAT
  • Eluate
  • Phenotyping
  • Antigen Typing
  • Product modifications such as syringe aliquots and irradiation
  • Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP)
  • Emergency release procedures

The requisition specifically notes that MLT candidates may be considered if they have actual blood bank experience in larger facilities with 500 beds.

Salary : $27 - $45
