Compensation: $130,000 to $160,000 per year

This Automation Engineer role designs, implements, and sustains automated manufacturing systems that improve production efficiency, consistency, and cost performance at a manufacturing facility. This position drives automation strategy by identifying capable vendors, developing system concepts, and integrating automation into manufacturing operations, with an emphasis on delivering measurable improvements in uptime, cost, and system performance.

The Automation Engineer designs and implements automated manufacturing systems that increase capacity, improve uptime, and ensure repeatable performance, and develops and integrates control systems including PLC, HMI, robotics, and vision to ensure safe, error proof, efficient operation. This role programs, debugs, and optimizes robotic and automated systems on the shop floor, interfaces automation with equipment including welding, cutting, stamping, forming, inspection, and assembly systems, and identifies, evaluates, and collaborates with automation vendors to deliver high quality system builds. The position reviews and approves system designs, assembly drawings, and tooling components for functionality and manufacturability, and supports IQ, OQ, and PQ validation activities to ensure systems meet regulatory and performance requirements. On the project management side, this role leads automation projects from concept through full production implementation, develops cost estimates and feasibility assessments, drives cross functional collaboration, and develops robust, repeatable manufacturing processes that meet defined run rates, scrap targets, and process capability requirements. The Automation Engineer also provides ongoing technical support and troubleshooting for automated and robotic systems, develops preventative maintenance strategies and standard work instructions, maintains bills of material for system builds and spare parts, and continuously improves system performance through monitoring, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field
  • 3 to 7 years of experience in automation, process improvement, or manufacturing engineering
  • Experience with IQ, OQ, and PQ validation processes and protocols
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize complex information and develop effective solutions
  • Proven ability to independently design cost effective, functional automation systems meeting complex requirements
  • Programming and debugging experience with PLCs, HMIs, robotics, and vision systems
  • Experience with Allen Bradley (RSLogix 5000), FactoryTalk, and RSLinx
  • Blueprint reading and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA / GR&R)
  • Design of Experiments (DOE)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in high volume manufacturing environments such as injection molding or metal stamping
  • Proficiency with Minitab or similar statistical tools
