Job Summary: The HSE Technician will be a key contributor to IEA's commitment to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) excellence. Reporting to the Site HSE Leader, this role involves collaboration with production teams and site personnel to ensure compliance with HSE regulations, foster a proactive safety culture, and uphold a safe working environment for all employees.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following with other duties assigned as necessary:

  • Policy and Procedure Management:
    • Develop a foundational understanding of local HSE policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
    • Assist in updating HSE policies and procedures to maintain compliance with current regulations.
  • Emergency Preparedness:
    • Gain knowledge of emergency response protocols and participate as an active member of the Emergency Response Team.
    • Respond promptly to emergencies, including spills, malfunctions, and other hazards on or off-site.
  • Compliance and Risk Management:
    • Support the identification and closure of compliance gaps related to local HSE regulations.
    • Monitor and report on non-compliance issues in plant operations, focusing on EPA and OSHA standards.
    • Assist with work permits (e.g., hot work, confined spaces) to ensure compliance and maintain accurate records.
  • Incident Reporting and Investigation:
    • Assist in reporting and investigating work-related incidents, injuries, and hazards.
    • Participate in hazard identification and risk assessment processes, using tools like the 5 Whys for root cause analysis and ensuring follow-up on corrective actions.
  • Training and Development:
    • Track, maintain, and coordinate HSE training records and ensure employees are up-to-date on required training.
    • Assist with New Employee Orientation, safety training, and leadership sessions to promote HSE awareness.
  • Inspections and Audits:
    • Conduct regular inspections of hazardous waste storage areas, keeping detailed inspection records.
    • Participate in environmental, health, and safety inspections and audits, gathering and analyzing safety-related data to identify trends.
  • Communication and Culture:
    • Promote HSE values and initiatives across the organization, facilitating clear and effective safety communication.
    • Serve as a point of contact for employees’ HSE concerns and actively contribute to a positive HSE culture.
  • Safety Committee Participation:
    • Actively participate in Safety Committee Meetings, providing updates on safety observations and sharing insights from inspections.
  • Documentation and Record-Keeping:
    • Maintain and update Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and ensure electronic records are current.
    • Ensure confidentiality and proper record-keeping aligned with corporate data protection standards.
  • External Collaboration:
    • Liaise with internal teams and external contractors to ensure safe practices, regulatory compliance, and contractor safety.
    • Act as a backup for the HSE Leader and assist HSE consultants as required.

Work Environment:

  • Work location(s):  Office; metal fabrication/assembly shop.
  • Exposure to:  Fumes, airborne particles, wet/humid (non-weather) conditions, toxic/caustic chemicals, moving mechanical parts/equipment, inclement weather conditions.
  • Personal protective equipment requirement:  Safety glasses and steel toe shoes when in shop areas.
Qualifications:

Position Requirements:

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, with strong organizational skills for managing data and records.

  • Action-Oriented: Shows initiative and energy in tackling new challenges and addressing issues promptly.

  • Process and Compliance Awareness: Strong understanding of safety processes, with the ability to identify compliance gaps and promote continuous improvement.
  • HSE Fundamentals: Advocates for safe practices, actively contributing to the creation of an injury-free workplace.
  • Analytical Skills: Able to gather, analyze, and interpret data to improve HSE performance.
  • Problem-Solving: Effectively employs root cause analysis techniques to investigate incidents and recommend corrective actions.
  • Commitment to Diversity: Values diverse perspectives and build collaborative relationships.
  • Educational:  High School Graduate related technical training (high school or beyond) is desirable but not essential.
  • Computer/ERP Skills: Intermediate working knowledge of Excel and entry- level understanding of ERP – Syteline would be a plus. 

Physical Demands:

  • Maximum lifting requirement (pounds):  75 (infrequently), 50 (occasionally), 25 (frequently)
  • Maximum moving requirement (pounds):  150 (with assistance).
  • Maintaining physical condition necessary for the following:  Frequent standing, walking, sitting, kneeling, crouching, stooping, squatting, twisting upper body, or climbing.
  • Working at heights off the ground up to 25 feet.
  • Vision requirements:  Close, distance, and peripheral vision; depth perception.
