The Journeyman Engineer is a skilled, union-represented facilities professional responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of building systems and hotel equipment. This role supports preventive maintenance, responds to service requests, and helps ensure life-safety readiness and compliance with applicable codes. Work is performed in alignment with Hyatt standards and property SOPs.

The Journeyman Engineer is a skilled, union-represented facilities professional responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of building systems and hotel equipment. This role supports preventive maintenance, responds to service requests, and helps ensure life-safety readiness and compliance with applicable codes. Work is performed in alignment with Hyatt standards and property SOPs.
Essential Functions
Building Systems & Maintenance
- Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair hotel systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and general building components.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance (PM) and corrective repairs for guestrooms, public areas, back-of-house, and mechanical spaces.
- Respond to work orders and service calls; diagnose issues and complete repairs with quality workmanship and minimal guest disruption.
- Conduct basic carpentry/patch/paint/tile work as assigned and within classification/scope.
- Support ongoing readiness for fire/life-safety and regulatory inspections (e.g., alarms, emergency lighting, egress, extinguishers coordination, documentation).
- Follow all safety procedures including lockout/tagout, ladder safety, PPE, chemical safety, and safe tool operation.
- Maintain accurate records/logs related to PM completion, readings, and work performed as required by SOPs and applicable regulations.
- Document work performed in the work order system; update status, parts used, and time as required.
- Communicate clearly with Rooms, Housekeeping, Front Office, and F&B regarding room status, scheduling access, and repair timelines.
- Escalate recurring issues, capital needs, and safety concerns to engineering leadership.
- Use and maintain tools and equipment properly; keep workspaces clean and safe.
- Assist with organizing parts and supplies; notify leadership of low stock or needed materials per process.
- Coordinate with vendors/contractors as directed by leadership, including escort and site support.
- Maintain a professional, service-focused approach when working in guest-facing areas and occupied rooms.
- Respect guest privacy and follow key control and room entry procedures at all times.

Qualifications
- Journeyman-level skills in one or more core trades (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical systems) with strong general maintenance capability.
- Prior experience in hotel, commercial building, or institutional facilities engineering (or equivalent).
- Ability to read and interpret work orders, basic blueprints/schematics, and equipment manuals.
- Strong troubleshooting and prioritization skills in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.
- Relevant licenses/certifications (as applicable): EPA Universal, HVAC/refrigeration, electrical, boiler/steam, building engineer credentials, or similar.
- Experience with CMMS/work order systems and preventive maintenance programs.
- High-rise or large full-service hotel experience.
- Ability to stand/walk for extended periods; work indoors/outdoors, including mechanical rooms and rooftops.
- Ability to lift, push, pull up to moderate weight; climb ladders; kneel, bend, reach; and use hand/power tools.
- Ability to work around heat, steam, water, noise, and cleaning chemicals while following safety procedures.
