2nd Grade Classroom Teacher

Position Purpose

Horizon Science Academy Davenport is a public charter school serving students in Kindergarten through 7th grade. We are seeking a dedicated and dependable Full-Time Building Substitute Teacher to join our school community.

The Building Substitute Teacher will provide consistent instructional support across the school by covering classrooms when teachers are absent, assisting with student supervision, supporting classroom instruction, and contributing to a positive and engaging learning environment. This position offers an excellent opportunity for an educator who enjoys working with students across multiple grade levels and becoming an integral part of a school community.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary building substitute and provide coverage for classrooms as assigned.
• Follow lesson plans and instructional materials provided by classroom teachers.
• Maintain a positive, safe, and inclusive classroom environment.
• Support students' academic, social, and emotional development.
• Provide instruction and classroom management across Kindergarten through 7th grade as needed.
• Build positive relationships with students and staff.
• Assist teachers and staff with instructional activities, supervision, and school-wide responsibilities.
• Maintain classroom routines and expectations in the absence of the regular classroom teacher.
• Communicate relevant student or classroom information with teachers and school administration.
• Support STEM-focused learning and school-wide educational initiatives.
• Collaborate with teachers and staff to ensure continuity of instruction and student support.
• Perform other duties as assigned by school administration.

Desired Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor's degree in Education or a related field preferred.
• Valid Iowa Substitute Teaching License.
• Previous experience working with elementary or middle school students preferred.
• Strong classroom management and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively with students across multiple grade levels.
• Dependable, flexible, and able to adapt quickly to changing classroom assignments.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.
• Commitment to creating a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
• Ability to build strong relationships with students, families, and staff.
• Interest in supporting STEM-focused education and the school's mission.

Work Schedule

Full-Time, School-Year Position

The Building Substitute Teacher will work the regular school-day schedule and will be assigned to classrooms and other school responsibilities based on the daily needs of the school.
