POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Senior Staff Accountant serves as a key link between the day-to-day transactional work handled by the Staff Accountant team and the broader financial oversight led by the Accounting Manager. This role takes ownership of core accounting functions, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records while supporting the month-end close process. In addition, the Senior Staff Accountant reviews the work of the Staff Accountants and plays an important role in financial reporting and analysis.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Represents Company in a professional and courteous manner.
- Demonstrates good prioritization of tasks.
- Performs and owns full-cycle accounting functions in compliance with GAAP, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of financial data.
- Assists in leading the month-end close process, including preparation and review of journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analysis.
- Prepares and maintains schedules supporting the general ledger, including accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets and inventory.
- Reviews and approves journal entries and reconciliations prepared by the Staff Accountants.
- Assists the Accounting Manager with preparation of internal financial reports and management packages.
- Utilizes QuickBooks Online and Excel for financial tracking, analysis, and reporting.
- Assists with allocation of costs to cost centers using QuickBooks classes.
- Oversees the accounts payable process, including reviewing vendor invoices entered by the Staff Accountants, managing check runs, and coordinating payment scheduling to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
- Reviews credit card transaction entries and bank matching performed by the Staff Accountants.
- Monitors cash disbursements for accuracy and flags discrepancies.
- Assists with cash management reporting as delegated by the Accounting Manager.
- Assists with tax administration, including preparation or review of periodic federal, state, sales, and property tax payments and tax returns as assigned.
- Supports implementation of accounting processes to meet company, state, federal, and accrediting organization standards.
- Maintains confidentiality of all financial information and plans.
- Directly supervises and mentors the Staff Accountants, reviewing their work, offering guidance, and supporting their ongoing professional development.
- Serves as a point of escalation for accounting questions and issues from the Staff Accountants.
- Collaborates with the Accounting Manager to delegate tasks appropriately and communicates workflow priorities.
- Participates in cross-departmental collaboration to support business decisions with accurate financial data.
- Maintains professional knowledge by attending educational workshops and reviewing professional publications.
- Completes ad hoc projects as requested by the Accounting Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience; private industry experience preferred.
- Highly proficient in QuickBooks Online.
- Advanced Excel skills required (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, financial modeling).
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP.
- Experience with fixed assets and cost center allocations preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise or mentor junior accounting staff.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Ethical behavior and discretion when handling sensitive financial information.
- A thirst for knowledge and a willingness to learn and grow in the accounting field.
