Job Description
Director of Engineering & Remote Property Infrastructure
A global, ultra-luxury hospitality brand recognized for delivering exceptional, custom backcountry experiences is seeking a Director of Engineering to oversee its international portfolio of world-class, intimate lodges. Operating across extraordinary domestic and international destinations—from the rugged fjords of Iceland and alpine peaks of Canada and Colorado to the pristine waters of the Bahamas, remote valleys of Chile, and isolated off-grid terrain in Alaska—this organization redefines high-end adventure. Designed for a forward-thinking technical leader, this remote role offers the freedom to live anywhere in the United States within easy access to a major airport, paired with regular, inspiring travel to some of the planet’s most exotic and challenging environments.
The Director of Engineering serves as the single executive accountable for the technical integrity, preventive maintenance, and physical condition of the entire physical portfolio. Working alongside on-property maintenance teams, local General Managers, and executive leadership, this leader will establish portfolio-wide maintenance standards, oversee property condition scoring, direct capital planning, and drive asset tracking software integration. Operating in high-demand, extreme climate environments—where daily generator usage, saltwater corrosion mitigation, high-altitude mechanics, and off-grid solar-hydronics are the norm—this role requires a rare combination of technical sophistication, systems expertise, and exceptional interpersonal skills. For a leader who thrives on navigating complex "people puzzles" across diverse cultures and views non-linear operational challenges as an exciting adventure, this position offers an unmatched career journey.
Position Responsibilities
Preventive Maintenance Program Ownership: Build, implement, and maintain a comprehensive, documented Preventive Maintenance (PM) program mapped to all major mechanical systems and guest rooms across all global commercial properties.
Property Audits & Condition Scoring: Conduct annual scored property audits utilizing a standardized multi-category weighted rubric to establish defensible condition records, manage deferred maintenance logs, and establish clear remediation timelines.
On-Site Team Support & Talent Leadership: Serve as a technical mentor and empowering force for on-property maintenance teams, elevating capabilities, standardizing documentation, and coaching staff across varying cultural backgrounds and technical skill levels.
Software & Asset Tracking Integration: Direct the transition and buildout of property asset inventories and maintenance tracking systems, capturing system service life, depreciation schedules, and historical spend to optimize operations.
Capital Planning & Life-Cycle Modeling: Collaborate closely with executive leadership and asset management to translate property condition data into long-term, costed capital expenditure (CapEx) plans and reserve budgets.
Vendor & Contractor Strategy: Build and manage relationships with licensed trades, specialty vendors, and technical contractors across all international sites, negotiating service agreements with response commitments tailored to remote regions.
Emergency Technical Response: Serve as the primary technical point of escalation for critical system failures, coordinating emergency contractor mobilization and leading post-event root-cause reviews.
Global Inspection Travel: Travel to remote international and domestic properties to inspect facilities, verify PM execution, conduct technical audits, and support local teams on-site.
Position Requirements
Multi-Property Leadership Experience: Significant engineering or facilities management leadership within ultra-luxury hospitality, high-end resort portfolios, or complex multi-facility environments.
Extreme Climate & Technical Systems Command: Demonstrated experience maintaining facilities across diverse and extreme climate conditions (e.G., coastal saltwater corrosion, extreme cold/heat, high altitude, island power grids, or off-grid power generation).
Preventive Maintenance & Asset Management: Strong background designing structured PM programs, managing capital planning, and utilizing CMMS or maintenance management software platforms.
Strong Interpersonal & Influencing Skills: Proven ability to build trust, influence on-site teams and General Managers without direct reporting authority, and bring diverse international staff along on proactive operational goals.
Entrepreneurial & Adaptive Mindset: Exceptional flexibility and comfort operating in dynamic, non-corporate, single-owner environments where creative problem-solving and adventure are celebrated.
Travel Readiness & Location: Remote work arrangement based in the United States with easy access to a major airport, with willingness to travel up to 25% (starting higher during initial onboarding and audit phases) to remote international locations.
Requirements: Valid passport, clean driving record, physical ability to inspect mechanical spaces and rooftops, and ability to lift 50+ pounds.
