Position Summary


The Safety Advocate will be responsible for ensuring the safety and security of all residents, staff, and visitors at the shelter. This position involves conducting routine safety checks, implementing de-escalation strategies, and providing a high level of security to maintain a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment. The Safety Advocate will work closely with the shelter team to promote a culture of safety while upholding the organization’s mission and values.


Job Description


Required Education, Experience and Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED required
  • 1 years’ experience in the security field, or a certificate indicating completion of a security course
  • Proven history of working well in stressful situations
  • Knowledge of Trauma Informed Care
  • Maintain valid Ohio driver’s license and ability to meet agency requirements for driving insurability
  • Must be able to meet agency requirements for criminal background check (Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations and Federal Bureau of Investigations)

Role and Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine security patrols internally and externally to ensure safety of the building, residents, and staff.
  • Perform safety screens of residents entering the building and assists with room checks to prevent prohibited items from entering the shelter.
  • Escort residents and staff safely in and out of the building, ensuring a secure environment at all times.
  • Implement de-escalation techniques to manage conflicts and maintain a calm, safe atmosphere.
  • Respond promptly to security risks or incidents, collaborating with law enforcement and emergency services as needed.
  • Support residents by providing assistance during times of stress or crisis while promoting a culture of safety and respect.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all information learned throughout employment and represent the organization’s mission professionally.
  • Ensure compliance with shelter policies safety standards, and federal/state regulations.
  • Represent the mission and philosophy of the organization at all times
  • Adheres to Service Excellence standards at all times
  • Complies with agency and program policies and procedures, federal and state requirements, CARF standards and educational/ certification/ registry requirements
  • Job duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time

  • Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; step up and down; stoop, kneel, crouch; talk, hear and drive. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Work environment: This position will be in a facility with victims of domestic violence or sexual assault. In addition to interaction with the survivors, the employee may have interactions with families of these individuals, the assailants and law enforcement.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

  • Sunday-Tuesday 4p-12a
  • Thursday-Saturday 4p-12a
