Role Summary
The Safety Officer will spearhead the development, implementation, and oversight of comprehensive safety programs to minimize operational risks, ensure full regulatory compliance, and cultivate a proactive safety culture across UTSS. This role emphasizes forward-thinking risk mitigation, rigorous on-site audits, and data-driven tracking/reporting of safety metrics to foster ongoing improvements. The Safety Officer is responsible for planning, implementing, and overseeing employee safety at UTSS, both Administrative and Technical employees. Additionally, the Safety Officer will ensure compliance to OSHA and ISO45001 safety requirements, as well as producing and promoting safety-oriented training programs, performing post-accident investigations, and tracking OSHA300 data.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as primary contact for field teams on safety/quality incidents, providing on-call support (including outside standard hours)
- Document all incidents (safety/quality) in EHS Insights software.
- Develop, deliver, and manage safety training programs via Paychex LMS, including annual and targeted sessions.
- Conduct field, site, and internal safety audits/inspections (including safety gear audits such as harnesses/ladders etc with proper documentation, tracking, and tagging).
- Procure, distribute, audit, and track PPE
- Lead monthly safety committee meetings and prepare agendas.
- Represent safety in management reviews and all audits (internal/external/customer).
- Deliver new hire safety orientations, presentations, and driving reviews/tests.
- Track and report key safety metrics using Samsara, Enterprise, Salesforce, and Paychex; generate weekly/monthly reports (including vehicle accidents per year by fault/not and severity, injuries by type and severity etc).
- Investigate incidents/near-misses/accidents, conduct root-cause analysis, recommend actions, and initiate insurance claims.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, ISO 45001, and other regulations; manage certifications.
- Collaborate with operations on job planning and risk assessments for rigging/installations.
- Promote safety culture via toolbox talks, committees, and engagement programs.
- Update and maintain safety policies/procedures.
- Handle first reports for vehicle accidents, employee injuries, and speeding violations.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's degree preferred (in safety, occupational health, or related field) or 7 years of relevant experience.
- 3–5 years in safety roles, preferably in technical services or construction.
- OSHA 30-hour certified
- Strong communication skills for training and employee interactions.
- Analytical skills for metrics tracking and reporting. (Excel, Salesforce)
- Knowledge of rigging, electrical, and vehicle safety.
- Proficiency with safety software (e.g., EHS Insights, Samsara, Paychex for LMS, Salesforce, Enterprise fleet online portal).
- Ability to work independently and handle on-call responsibilities.
- Valid driver's license; clean background report (to operate company vehicles).
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Willingness to obtain necessary vaccinations or badges for access to hospital sites.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with ISO and OSHA audits, including internal and external audits.
- Advanced certifications like Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
- Experience in fleet management safety.
