What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth Shelter - Resident Counselor position at HONORehg?
A Friends House is Orange County's only Runaway and Homeless Youth Shelter.
We are a temporary shelter where caring staff offer guidance and support to youth in crisis. Our mission is to give youth the tools and support they need, in a safe and homelike environment, to manage challenges and reconnect with their family and community.
We operate 13 beds and serve youth from infants through age 17. Resident Counselors utilize the Positive Youth Development Approach to mentor and support youth in our care.
As a Youth Resident Counselor, you will provide trauma-informed, non-judgmental care and compassion by listening to clients’ concerns and offering supportive, non-directive counseling. You will also be responsible for the overall safety and well-being of the youth during your shift.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Valid New York State driver’s license (must maintain in good standing).
- Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, emotionally upset and at times hostile youth within the facility.
- Ideal candidates will have prior experience working with youth, particularly in supportive or crisis settings, though related experience such as teaching, coaching, mentoring, or childcare is also welcome.
- Ability to successfully complete all required background checks, including the State Central Register.
- Bilingual a plus, but not required.
Job Responsibilities:

- Maintain the safety and well-being of youth, including those who may be emotionally upset, in crisis, or displaying challenging behaviors.

- Demonstrate integrity, a positive attitude, and self-direction with a strong passion for HONOR’s mission.
- Communicate effectively, document clearly, and work collaboratively as part of a team.
Schedule:
- Full-Time: Thursday – Monday, 4:00 PM – 12:00 AM
- On-Call: Various shifts available
