What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior X-Ray Imaging Systems Engineer position at Holobeam Technologies?
Onsite, Bethpage, NY
Holobeam Technologies is developing a next-generation X-ray imaging system. We are looking for a senior hardware systems integrator who can lead the end-to-end hardware integration of the system, including detector integration, X-ray source/generator integration, optical/reflector integration, custom collimation, mechanical alignment, and safety compliance.
This person will be the technical “owner” of the hardware system project, the main hardware interface expert to external vendors, and the key integrator who makes the system work as a whole in our facility.
System Architecture & Integration (Core)
- Own the full hardware system architecture: X-ray source/generator, beam conditioning components, collimation, detector acquisition, mechanics, shielding, and safety interlocks.
- Lead integration of medical human/veterinary application hardware with acquisition hardware/software; ensure timing, synchronization, and data integrity.
- Integrate and align custom X-ray components. Experience with beam handling/ conditioning elements, including mechanical mounts, adjustability, thermal stability, and alignment workflows.
- Design and integrate custom collimation components, including angular-selective collimation and scatter suppression, ensuring separation performance and minimizing cross-talk/scatter artifacts.
Manage the design and fabrication of custom parts, including:
- rigid stacked detector mounts/frames
- slanted angular collimator assemblies
- optic mounts and alignment fixtures
- calibration fixtures / phantoms (in collaboration with imaging team)
- Work with external machine shops and optics vendors to define drawings, tolerances, acceptance criteria, and test procedures.
- Specify and document mechanical tolerances and alignment requirements.
Develop system-level test plans to validate:
- beam geometry
- detector alignment and registration stability
- scatter performance and grid effectiveness
- dose efficiency / exposure consistency
- repeatability and drift over time/temperature
- Execute hands-on testing in shielded X-ray room, including setup, measurement, debugging, and iteration.
- Perform failure analysis and root-cause investigation across optics, mechanics, and detector acquisition.
- Responsible for safety and compliance documentation.
- Lead technical relationships with detector manufacturers, optics suppliers, and OEM X-ray generator vendors.
- Own procurement technical specifications requirements and acceptance testing for long-lead components.
- Drive schedule execution, manage risks, and ensure parallel workstreams move forward.
- Collaborate with software and algorithm teams to define calibration workflows and interface requirements.
- Ensure system meets internal safety requirements for X-ray operation (shielding, interlocks, warning systems, dose monitoring).
- Act as Radiation Safety Officer / facility compliance officer for safe operation in shielded room.
- Produce clear design documentation: system diagrams, bills of materials, test reports, alignment procedures, and integration documentation.
3 years experience in X-ray imaging hardware, medical imaging, radiographic systems, or related field.
Demonstrated experience integrating:
- X-ray tube generator systems (kVp/mA control, timing, exposure)
- flat panel detectors (DR or industrial radiography)
- mechanical alignment of imaging assemblies
- mechanical design and tolerance stack-up
- precision alignment (fixtures, shims, stages)
- debugging system-level problems across subsystems
- Experience working with external vendors on custom parts and long-lead components.
- Comfortable working in a shielded X-ray environment and following radiation safety procedures.
- Ability to communicate clearly, write integration/test documentation, and lead cross-functional work.
X-ray / Imaging Domain
- Experience with dual-energy subtraction, multi-layer detectors, or multi-channel radiography.
- Experience with anti-scatter grids, collimation design, and scatter modeling.
- Familiarity with image registration requirements tied to hardware alignment.
X-ray Optics / Beam Conditioning
- Experience with X-ray optics, including multilayer mirrors, diffractive optics, or crystal optics (Bragg/Laue).
- Experience integrating optics that require angle-sensitive alignment and stability.
Experience transitioning prototypes into robust systems (DFM, serviceability, reliability).
- Experience with veterinary imaging systems or compact radiography platforms.
- CAD: SolidWorks / Fusion / Creo (or similar)
- Tolerance analysis, GD&T, and precision machining practices
- Understanding of X-ray physics: attenuation, scatter, beam hardening, SNR, dose relationships
- Familiarity with detector performance metrics: DQE, MTF, lag, gain/offset correction
- Comfortable working with basic scripting / data tools (Python/Matlab) to analyze test results
- Ability to work with data acquisition systems and interfaces (Ethernet/CameraLink/USB/SDKs)
