Optical Engineer / Optics Specialist
📍 Long Island, NY | On-site | Relocation Assistance Provided
🏥 Advanced Medical Imaging | High-Growth Startup
About the Role
We are a fast-growing, mission-driven startup developing next-generation optical and laser-based medical imaging systems. We’re looking for a hands-on Laser / Optical / Fiber Optics Research Scientist to “own” the project to develop critical optical subsystems and help translate advanced photonics research into real-world medical devices that improve patient outcomes.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives on experimental work, enjoys end-to-end system development, and wants to see their work move quickly from lab to impact.
What You’ll Do
- Design, build, and experimentally validate advanced laser, fiber-optic, and interferometric systems
- Develop coherent optical architectures, including active feedback, phase-locking, and electro-optical servo control
- Perform precision alignment and integration of free-space and fiber-based optical systems
- Implement wavefront shaping, phase modulation, and structured illumination (SLMs, DLPs, etc.)
- Troubleshoot and optimize optical, electro-optical, and piezo-based subsystems
- Collaborate closely with a small, highly technical team to drive rapid iteration
- Stay current with emerging advances in photonics and medical imaging
What We’re Looking For
- BS, MS or PhD graduates, or 3 years of relevant industry experience in Optical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, or related field
- Strong hands-on experience with:
- Spatial light modulators (SLMs), structured light, imaging through scattering media, interferometric imaging, etc.
- Precision fiber optics is a big plus
- Laser system design and integration
- Interferometry and optical phase control
- Free-space and fiber-optic alignment
- Feedback-controlled electro-optical systems
- Fourier optics and coherent optical systems
- Experience with MATLAB, Mathematica, or LabVIEW (Python/C a plus)
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced startup environment
- Collaborative, mission-driven, and technically rigorous
Nice to Have
- Experience in Optical Coherence Tomography, digital holography, or 3D imaging
- Background in medical imaging, infrared systems, or nonlinear optics
- Familiarity with Zemax, COMSOL, or similar tools
Why Join Us
- Develop core optical systems in a first-in-class medical imaging platform
- Work on technology with direct clinical and patient impact
- Competitive salary, equity, bonuses, and full benefits
- Relocation support to Long Island, NY (ranked the safest county in the U.S.)
- High autonomy, rapid iteration, and real technical influence
