Position Summary
The Grit Blast Operator is responsible for preparing surfaces using grit blasting equipment, including removing contaminants like paint, rust, and dirt. They operate equipment, load abrasives, mask areas, and ensure products meet specifications.
Responsibilities
- Operates machinery to direct abrasive-laden air or gas over surfaces to remove contaminants and achieve a desired finish
- Shovels or pours specified grades of abrasive materials (sand, grit, shot) into the machine hopper
- Masks areas of the object to protect them from the abrading action
- Prepares surfaces for painting, stripping paint, or removing other contaminants
- May examine finished products to ensure they meet specified requirements for quality control
- Maintains grit blast equipment and ensures adherence to safety protocols
- May perform minor maintenance tasks on equipment
- May perform other duties as assigned, such as receiving goods, positioning parts, or preparing materials for shipment
Requirements
- Prior experience using abrasive blasting equipment and techniques is preferred
- Ability to read and interpret plans, instructions, or specifications to determine work activities
- General knowledge of grit blasting and component finishing techniques and equipment
- Written and verbal communication skills
- General knowledge of Office 365 applications (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint)
- Work independently, follow instructions, and concentrate for long periods of time
- Strong attention to detail and thoroughness
- May require physical strength for tasks like shoveling abrasives
- A strong understanding of safety procedures related to abrasive blasting equipment
