Controller
The Controller is responsible for assisting in all accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls for the company. This role ensures accurate and timely financial information, supports the CFO in budgeting and analysis, and assists ownership with basic tax coordination in partnership with the external CPA firm. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working in a dynamic, multi-location business environment.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Operations
- Lead and manage day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger maintenance, accounts payable and receivable, and payroll processing.
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP standards.
- Perform regular reconciliations of bank accounts, credit cards, and balance sheet accounts to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Ensure timely and accurate recording of revenue, commissions, inventory activity, and financial transactions across multiple retail locations.
- Oversee vendor payments, monitor operating expenses, and support cost control initiatives.
Financial Planning & Analysis
- Partner closely with the CFO to support budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance analysis.
- Maintain cash flow reporting and assist with weekly cash forecasting and liquidity planning.
- Provide management with meaningful financial insights, trend analysis, and variance reporting to support strategic decision-making.
- Prepare audit schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for lenders, auditors, and external reporting requirements.
Tax & Compliance Support
- Maintain organized financial records and supporting documentation for all tax-related filings and reporting requirements.
- Collaborate with external CPA firms during tax preparation and year-end reporting processes.
- Assist ownership with financial documentation related to K-1s, distributions, and expense classifications.
- Track and monitor business and tax filing deadlines to ensure timely compliance with all federal, state, and local requirements.
Internal Controls & Regulatory Compliance
- Develop and maintain internal accounting controls and financial procedures to safeguard company assets and ensure reporting accuracy.
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee sales tax filings, payroll tax submissions, and other required compliance reporting.
- Continuously evaluate accounting workflows and recommend improvements to strengthen efficiency, accuracy, and financial controls.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Administer and maintain accounting systems, including QuickBooks or other ERP platforms, ensuring integrity and reliability of financial data.
- Support integration and reconciliation between POS systems, payroll platforms, and accounting software.
- Identify opportunities for automation, process optimization, and enhanced financial reporting capabilities.
- Recommend technology solutions and best practices to improve operational effectiveness within the Finance function.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration required.
- 5–8 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within retail, telecom, or multi-location business environments.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, accrual accounting, reconciliations, and cash flow management.
- Proficiency with QuickBooks or comparable accounting/ERP systems.
- Experience preparing financial statements, managing month-end close activities, and supporting audit processes.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively across departments and leadership levels.
- High level of integrity and discretion when handling confidential financial and business information.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA certification or active pursuit of CPA designation preferred.
- Familiarity with business and personal tax processes, including ownership distributions and K-1 reporting.
- Experience supporting process improvement and financial systems optimization initiatives.
- Ability to operate independently while managing multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
