What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Scientist - Biology position at Hired LLC?
We are a growing civil, geotechnical, and environmental engineering firm headquartered in Beaver, WV. We are looking for a motivated Staff Scientist/Biologist to join our Environmental practice, supporting wetland and stream delineation, permitting, and field assessment work for energy, mining, and infrastructure clients across the region. This role offers a mix of field and office work with room to grow into a well-rounded environmental professional.
What you'll do
- Conduct stream and wetland field identification and delineation
- Perform field routing assessments and route development walks for linear projects
- Prepare permit applications for energy industry clients, including coal and natural gas
- Assist in preparing detailed field documentation, reports, and mapping exhibits
- Communicate with clients, third parties, and regulatory agents regarding project status, schedules, and compliance issues
- Synthesize and interpret biological information and prepare technical reports
- Consult with agencies on regulatory compliance and permitting, including NEPA, ESA, CWA, and state and county equivalents
At times, this role may also include:
- Erosion & sedimentation inspections
- Water quality sampling of environmental resources and discharge points
- Stream flow monitoring, including flow volumes, observations, and water chemistry
- Fish and wildlife species identification, habitat ecology, and monitoring surveys
- Vegetation community (upland, riparian, and wetland) and habitat classification/inventory
What you'll bring
- Bachelor's degree in an applicable field, such as Biological Science, Wildlife Ecology, Environmental Science, or Fisheries and Wildlife Management
- 0 to 5 years of professional field experience in wildlife species taxonomy, ecology, and surveys, as well as vegetation and wetland assessment, in the Eastern United States
- Strong problem-solving skills and exceptional attention to detail
- Demonstrable technical writing and editing ability
- Good interpersonal communication and oral presentation skills
- Excellent planning and organization skills, with a commitment to quality in both work processes and products
- Willingness to assume new roles and ability and willingness to travel as needed
Nice to have
- Master's degree in a related field
- Completion of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation and Management Training Program
- Prior experience in the private sector or natural resources/ecological consulting business
- Experience with biological resource mitigation design and monitoring planning
