What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Accounting position at High Country Search Group?
We're looking for an established finance and accounting leader to oversee the core accounting function across a closely held organization with significant real estate holdings. The role will support a mix of real estate operations and family office needs—approximately 60% real estate and 40% family office—and will be based in Las Vegas.
This is a hands-on leadership role centered on accurate reporting, strong controls, thoughtful management, and clear communication with principals and stakeholders. It is not an investment or asset management position. The right person will bring deep accounting expertise, sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to make complex financial information easy to understand.
There is potential for this role to grow into a CFO position over time.
What you'll do
- Lead and oversee the organization’s accounting operations, including treasury and cash management.
- Establish and strengthen accounting policies, procedures, controls, and team workflows.
- Manage and develop the accounting team.
- Prepare and present clear financial reporting, KPIs, and business insights to principals and key stakeholders.
- Review financial statements provided by third-party property managers, ensuring transactions are properly coded, accruals are accurate, and reporting is complete.
- Oversee balance sheets and reporting at the single-property entity level.
- Manage financial reporting and required submissions to lenders.
- Oversee construction draw preparation and submission to banking partners.
- Support forecasting and budgeting activities.
- Oversee tax processes, including the review of returns and distribution of K-1s.
- Evaluate and communicate the tax consequences of investment and business decisions.
- Ensure accurate capitalization and accounting treatment across the real estate portfolio.
What we're looking for
- Active CPA license.
- Significant accounting leadership experience, with current or recent responsibility at the Controller, Director of Accounting, Director of Finance, or comparable level.
- Demonstrated experience managing people and improving accounting policies and procedures.
- Strong tax background, including experience with closely held flow-through entities, partnership taxation, tax returns, and K-1s.
- Experience performing the work in an industry setting rather than solely reviewing it in public accounting.
- Strong forecasting, financial reporting, treasury, and cash management capabilities.
- High level of professionalism, discretion, integrity, and trustworthiness.
- Ability to translate detailed financial information into clear reporting and useful KPIs for principals and stakeholders.
- Ability to work from the Las Vegas office.
Preferred experience
- Experience in real estate, construction, a family office with substantial real estate holdings, or an adjacent industry.
- Familiarity with Sage accounting software.
