SUMMARY:
WAVE Foundation’s Camp WAVE Counselor serves as an instructor for Camp WAVE education programs, which aim to excite, engage and educate our community about the wonders of aquatic life and the importance of conservation. The Camp WAVE Counselor is instrumental in executing the curriculum for Camp WAVE. Under the supervision of the Camp WAVE Supervisor, Counselors will develop and execute curriculum for the upcoming summer camp program, making sure those programs are in alignment with State and National standards, while serving as an ambassador for WAVE in the community and other duties as assigned.

Required Skills
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist/Lead in the delivery of Camp WAVE, including after care as needed.
- Assist/Lead with daily camp activities including behavior management, set up, instruction, clean up and supply inventory.
- Serve as a mentor and leader for Camp WAVE including interns, and Jr counselors and work with them to guarantee program success, organization of schedules, rosters, paper work, and camper safety.
- Follow and adhere to the WAVE Foundation and Newport Aquarium safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe camp experience for all participants, staff, volunteers, and animals.
- Operate a variety of audio/visual equipment upon completion of training to be provided by Education Staff
- Communicate and maintain working relationships with counselors, students, guests, staff, supervisors, volunteers, other departments, and colleagues in related industries
- Communicate well in an environment which may include young children, loud noises, large crowds and varying settings (each program is unique and you must be prepared to work with a new environment each time)
- Perform Herschend Family Entertainment and WAVE Foundation at Newport Aquarium Core Values , Guest Service Accountabilities, Policies and Procedures, and Safety Protocols
Required Experience
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Completed degree or working towards some form of degree, preferably in an animal science or educational field.
- Must have strong public speaking skills, and an affinity for teaching young children
- Camp WAVE Counselors must have full availability from May 30– August 4 unless prior approval has been ascertained before camps. The week runs Monday-Friday between the hours of 8:00am – 4:00pm, with potential of before care and after care responsibilities. Weekends are not required, week off July 3-7.
- Willingness to take direction and coaching from experienced staff members to improve skills and enhance camper experience
- Understanding of day camp procedures/standards preferred, or willingness to learn
- Certified in First Aid/CPR or willing to become certified.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Successful completion of background check.
- Able to lift 40lbs and physically move about the facility, including pushing heavy carts. Reasonable accommodation available.
- Ability to present programs offsite for extended periods of time
- No history of allergy related to animals or plants which might interfere with ability to work.
- Immunocompetence (possible exposure to infections and parasitic disease).
- Position may involve exposure to inclement weather, dust, potentially dangerous or unpredictable animal species, and potential dangerous machinery, restraint devices and toxic chemicals. Occasional use of protective clothing or equipment is required e.g. boots, goggles, mask, gloves.
