What are the responsibilities and job description for the SENIOR ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY position at Henry County Government?
This position is responsible for evaluating gang motivated criminal cases that come into the office and to represent the State in the resolution of the case via dismissal, plea negotiations, or trial.Works closely with law enforcement to identify gangs, gang motivated crimes and assist with gang suppression; drafts accusations and indictments; evaluates and researches potential defenses; dismisses cases not prosecutable; reads and interprets cases submitted by investigator; reads police reports; determines whether further investigation is needed; approves or returns cases for more work; researches alternative crimes; reads and researches case law; presents cases to grand jury; questions witnesses; answers jurors' questions; determines appropriate sentence recommendations; calls arraignment calendars; attends pre-trail conferences with judges and defense attorneys; subpoenas appropriate witnesses for motions; researches and argues all pretrial and post trail motions; files motions in appropriate time frame prior to trial; complies with discovery requirements by copying and mailing documents; works with trial team investigators and victim advocates to coordinate witnesses and evidence for trials; gathers and labels evidence; negotiates pleas to dispose of cases; interviews witnesses, victims, experts and the police; questions potential jurors and selects jury; arranges interpreter services for witnesses when necessary; develops trial strategy for each case; organizes opening and closing arguments; presents evidence at trial; consults with supervisors about trial strategy; represents state in probation revocation hearings; responds to parole notices; handles telephone calls from attorneys, witnesses, and concerned citizens; determines appropriate bond amounts; attends meetings; maintains continuing education requirements; supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling and completing employee performance appraisals; performs related duties as required.Juris Doctorate; supplemented by four (4) years previous experience and/or training that includes litigation and criminal law experience and experience prosecuting gang motivated crime.
Must possess and maintain valid membership in the Georgia Bar Association, Court of Appeals of the State of Georgia and Supreme Court of the State of Georgia.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job is acceptable.
Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License.
Knowledge of the techniques, and principles and procedures related to court proceedings and the criminal justice system; skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with department employees and all other constituents; extensive knowledge of principles of criminal and civil law, judicial procedures and rules of Evidence; ability to establish and maintain effective professional and working relationships with elected officials, department heads, officials, employees of other agencies, members of the news media and the general public; ability to maintain confidentiality related to complex legal matters; ability to effectively manage a courtroom setting and demonstrate advanced negotiation skills; knowledge of legal research techniques and legal terminology; knowledge of local, state and federal laws and regulations; relevant computer knowledge and experience; skill in oral and written communications including an ability to write and edit information in a clear and concise manner and to assemble large, complex documents; good knowledge of the principles and practices of a District Attorney's Office.
