SUMMARY : This is professional legal work assisting the District Attorney as a representative of the state. Duties include preparing cases for indictment; representing the state on non-jury days; preparing and prosecuting assigned misdemeanor and criminal felony cases; and preparing cases for condemnation proceedings, appeals, preliminary hearings and bond hearings. The incumbent serves as direct supervisor to assigned employees. Responsibilities include assigning and supervising work in progress, and reviewing completed work to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures. May provide input in hiring, promoting, and disciplining employees. The employee may provide direct assistance to employees in completing assigned job duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties include but are not limited to:
· Supervising assigned employees:
o Planning and assigning work
o Reviewing completed and work in progress for compliance with established policies and procedures
o Training and counseling employees
o Making recommendations on formal personnel actions
· Conducting research, interviewing clients, and witnesses and handling other details in preparation for trial
· Preparing legal briefs, developing strategy, arguments, and testimony in preparation for presentation of case
· Researching and drafting indictments for presentation to Grand Jury
· Interviewing victims, witnesses, deputies, police officers, detectives, and others to ascertain facts of case
· Reviewing pertinent decisions, policies, regulations, and other legal matters pertaining to case
· Arguing appellate motions in Court of Appeals and Georgia Supreme Court
· Negotiating pleas with other attorneys
· Prosecuting assigned cases in court
· Drafting discovery documents, pleadings, motions, and consent judgments for condemnation action
· Examining and accepting or rejecting allotted number of prospective jurors
· Appearing against accused in court of law and presents evidence before Judge or other judiciary and jury
· Examining and cross examining witnesses to ascertain facts of case
· Representing the state on non-jury calendar days regarding arraignments, probation revocations, guilty pleas, sentencing hearings, motions, et cetera
· Maintaining contacts with Clerk of Court; law enforcement agencies and other agencies in performing assigned job duties
· Performing other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
· Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree in law
· Two years professional related work experience
o Minimum one year of which was performed as a practicing attorney
· An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be 18 years of age or older
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
· Possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License (Class C) and a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR)
· Membership in the Georgia State Bar
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of county and department operations, ordinances, policies, procedures, terminology, and materials as they relate to assignment
- Knowledge of applicable state, federal, state, and local codes and ordinances, laws, rules, and regulations as they relate to assignment
- Knowledge of business English, spelling, and grammar and legal terminology
- Knowledge of court systems, rules, practices, and procedures; documents, regulations, and state laws related to assigned court/legal office

- Knowledge of the Criminal Code of Georgia and Georgia Statutes relating to criminal conduct
