Overview
The Sales & Use Tax Manager will lead and manage the sales and use tax function, ensuring compliance while identifying planning opportunities and mitigating risk across multi-state operations. This role partners closely with finance, legal, operations, and external advisors to support business growth, transactions, and evolving regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of U.S. sales and use tax compliance, including return preparation, review, filings, and payments across multiple jurisdictions
- Oversee nexus determinations, taxability analyses, exemption certificate management, and audit defense activities
- Serve as the primary subject matter expert on sales and use tax matters, advising internal stakeholders on transactional and operational tax issues
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and assess their impact on the business; implement process and system changes as needed
- Lead sales tax audits, including data gathering, issue resolution, and interaction with taxing authorities
- Partner with IT and finance teams to enhance sales tax automation, systems integrations, and data accuracy
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, reduce exposure, and enhance efficiency through planning and technology
- Manage and mentor junior tax staff and coordinate with external advisors and service providers
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA, JD, or MST strongly preferred
- 6 years of progressive indirect tax experience with a strong focus on U.S. sales and use tax
- In-depth knowledge of multi-state sales tax rules, including nexus, sourcing, exemptions, and audit procedures
- Experience supporting audits and interacting directly with state and local taxing authorities
- Familiarity with sales tax automation tools (e.g., Avalara, Vertex, or similar platforms)
- Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to operate independently in a fast-paced, evolving environment
Salary : $110,000 - $150,000
