Duties

Under limited administrative supervision of a principal and technical supervision of the District Librarian, perform technical library media center functions at an assigned school site; oversee circulation activities; organize, distribute and store library and audio-visual materials; provide general and reference assistance to students and teachers; select and purchase library materials; conduct library orientations.ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Perform technical library media center functions at an assigned school site; participate in circulation activities; organize, distribute and store library and audio-visual materials.

Provide general and reference assistance to students and teachers; conduct library orientations; schedule and coordinate library activities; promote student use of the library for research and reading pleasure.

Assist students in researching materials for classroom use; assist students in locating and selecting materials; instruct students in proper methods of utilizing the library and reference materials; monitor and maintain acceptable student behavior in the library.

After consultation with faculty, select and requisition library materials; research and preview new materials; compile lists of potential purchases; type requisitions for the purchase of books, magazines and other materials; obtain authorized signatures; receive, process and distribute library materials.

Input, process and receive library materials; prepare materials for introduction into the library materials collection; prepare labels; affix identification labels to materials; input related information into assigned computer database.

Oversee and participate in circulation activities; check library materials in and out to students and staff; check and prepare materials for return to the circulating collection; shelve returned books, materials and audio-visual equipment; reserve books for students and staff; keep library records.

Maintain record of overdue materials and send overdue notices to students and teachers; clear students of library fines, debts and delinquencies; collect books, materials and money and notify appropriate staff of clearance.

Compose and type a variety of materials including lists, requisitions, forms, letters, memoranda, overdue notices and other materials; compile bibliographies.

Organize and prepare library displays, decorations and bulletin boards; maintain work area in a neat and orderly condition.

Operate and maintain a variety of office and instructional equipment including a, electronic audio-video equipment, video camera, copier, computer, fax machine and projector; notify appropriate personnel regarding maintenance and repair needs; demonstrate the use of equipment to students and staff.

Inspect library and media materials; pull and route materials in need of mending, binding or discarding; assess need for replacement or repair; perform minor repairs to damaged books and library materials; prepare related reports.

Inventory library books, materials and audio-visual equipment.

Monitor assigned library budgets and track the status of materials ordered.

Communicate with library media staff, administrators, teachers, parents and outside agencies to exchange information, coordinate activities and resolve issues.

Train and provide work direction to student assistances and volunteers as assigned.

Other Duties

Attend a variety of meetings, conferences and in-service trainings as assigned; conduct book fairs and special library events.

Perform other duties, related to the job, as assigned.

Maintain records and prepare reports.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.Graduation from high school and one year experience working in a library.Exams are required for ALL applicants

Online Written Exam: Week of 10/13/25 Oral Interview : TBD Dates are tentative, but it is highly recommended that you plan your calendar accordingly. No make-up dates will be offered.

Please note: The qualifying pass point on written examinations may be an actual score or an adjusted score based on the difficulty of the examination, the quality of the competition, and the needs of the service.

Positions in the job classification may work 16-40 hours/week.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION: The duration of the eligibility list is 6 months unless extended by the Executive Director of Classified Human Resources and the Personnel Commission.

Applicants selected for permanent or substitute assignments are required to pay for fingerprinting services and obtain Tuberculosis results prior to beginning work. If you have any questions regarding the fees, please feel free to contact the Human Resources Department at (510) 784-2648.

Hayward Unified School District will provide a contribution of up to $2,500 per year to be used towards a District healthcare plan or cash in lieu of up to $1,350 per year. Full-time employees are required to purchase medical health benefits unless proof of alternate coverage is provided. Half-time and less than half-time employees may participate on a voluntary basis. The balance of health benefit costs are paid through a pre-tax payroll deduction.

Dental coverage is provided free of charge for all employees working 20 hours per week, or more. Family coverage is available and any additional premium will be employee paid.

Classified employees must participate in the CalPERS Retirement program.

All employees are enrolled in an Employee Assistant Program (EAP).

The District also offers various optional benefits including life insurance, short term disability, and a medical and dependent care flexible spending option.
