Summary
Under very-limited supervision the Lead Heavy Equipment Mechanic may perform journey level heavy equipment maintenance and repairs for the Hays County Transportation Department. Additional duties and responsibilities include inventory management, equipment tracking, supervision of junior employees, and preparation of reports regarding equipment repair, maintenance, or replacement.

Additional duties and responsibilities include inventory management, equipment tracking, supervision of junior employees, and preparation of reports regarding equipment repair, maintenance, or replacement.
Responsibilities
- Supervises junior personnel under the authority of the Equipment and Fleet Manager
- Manages filter, belt, and hose inventory
- Tracks equipment maintenance
- Creates reports concerning replacement of fleet equipment
- Trains other mechanics in current repair methodology
- Coordinates classes and training for shop personnel
- Maintains and administers the shop safety program
- Manages and orders parts
- Manages equipment stored at the yard
- Coordinates tire repairs
- Prioritizes and schedules the order of repairs
- Problem solves and assesses equipment issues
- Manages third party repairs of County equipment
- Enters equipment data daily
- Assists, identifies, and prepares equipment items for yearly auction
- Communicates clearly with office staff
- Other duties as assigned
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted on a year for year basis.
- Certificate in Heavy Equipment or Diesel equipment repair OR
- Five (5) years of Heavy Equipment Repair experience OR
- Journeyman status from union specializing in equipment repair
- Certified Welder preferred
- Class B or A CDL w/ HazMat endorsement
- Osha 10 training preferred
- First Aid/CPR training preferred
Salary : $52,666 - $55,873
