Middle School Associate Principal

SUMMARY: The Middle School Associate Principal serves as a leadership partner to the Middle School Principal, sharing responsibility for the middle school's instructional excellence, operational effectiveness, and culture. This leader plays a vital role in advancing student achievement and well-being for grades 6-8 through teacher development, student support systems, and daily operations management. The Associate Principal is positioned as a co-leader in driving school improvement initiatives and is integral to building a safe, inclusive, and academically rigorous environment where all students thrive.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conducts regular classroom observations and provides actionable feedback to teachers; facilitates professional learning communities and mentors new staff through comprehensive onboarding and ongoing professional growth planning
  • Leads specific instructional initiatives as assigned, ensuring alignment with Michigan Department of Education requirements and best practices in middle-level education
  • Partners with the Principal in designing professional learning, teacher evaluation processes, and recruiting/screening candidates for middle school positions
  • Develops and implements comprehensive student support systems, including MTSS, PBIS, and restorative practices; coordinates student wellness initiatives and crisis response protocols
  • Maintains high expectations for student conduct while ensuring fair, consistent, and developmentally appropriate responses; uses data to identify patterns and implement proactive interventions
  • Promotes student voice and leadership through advisory programs and meaningful involvement in school decision-making
  • Oversees daily building operations, including master schedule development, student supervision, safety protocols, and coordination of student activities and athletics; supervises afternoon and evening school events
  • Builds authentic partnerships with families through regular communication and responsive problem-solving; serves as a key point of contact for parent concerns
  • Works collaboratively with the Director of Student Services to ensure appropriate programming for students with diverse learning needs, including English learners and those with IEPs or 504 plans
  • Analyzes achievement, behavioral, and attendance data to identify trends and opportunity gaps; leads data analysis sessions with teacher teams to inform instructional decisions
  • Serves as an active member of the administrative team, contributing expertise and participating in district-level continuous improvement efforts
  • Assumes principal responsibilities in the Principal's absence, providing seamless leadership continuity

Qualifications

  • Valid Michigan School Administrator Certificate (or eligibility to obtain prior to start)
  • Master's degree in Educational Leadership, School Administration, or related field
  • Minimum of three years of successful teaching experience, preferably at the middle school level
  • Strong understanding of middle school practices, early adolescent development, MTSS, PBIS, restorative practices, and social-emotional learning frameworks
  • Proven ability to analyze and use data to inform instructional decisions and support student growth
  • Exceptional communication and leadership skills, including teacher development and conflict resolution
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practices and adolescent mental health needs

Terms of Employment

220 days; Full-time, Exempt administrative position

Compensation

Salary range: Commensurate with experience and qualifications; comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, vision insurance, retirement contributions, and professional development opportunities.
