Direct Support Professional - Part Time / On-Call

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Client Support: Assist individuals with daily living activities such as personal care, meal preparation, medication management, and community engagement and transportation to and from appointments as needed by the clients.
  • Behavioral Support: Implement individualized support plans and strategies to address behavioral challenges, encouraging positive interactions and skill development.
  • Social Inclusion: Facilitate community involvement by organizing and participating in recreational and social activities that promote engagement and interaction.
  • Advocacy: Advocate for clients’ rights and preferences, ensuring their voices are heard in personal and programmatic decisions.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and timely client records both digitally using Therap (during work hours using your own personal device) and manually as needed on client progress, behaviors, incidents, medical and other communications as per organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaboration: Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including families, social workers, and medical professionals, to ensure comprehensive support.
  • Training and Development: Participate in ongoing training and professional development to enhance skills and knowledge related to best practices in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer or designee.

Qualifications include:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities or in a related field is preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships with clients and their families.
  • Knowledge of person-centered planning and behavioral support strategies and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating flexibility and a positive, professional attitude.
  • Must pass background checks and meet other eligibility requirements as per Washington State law.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend at a minimum of High School level.
  • Must maintain and utilize a personal mobile device for client documentation via a secure, HIPAA- compliant application, and for accurate time tracking in UKG.
  • Must possess a valid Drivers License and have proof of insurance at the time of hire.
  • Obtain 12 CEU’s annually after the 1st year of hire independently to remain as an employee (effective 1/1/2026)
  • Must complete initial CPR/First Aid and Blood-borne Pathogens certification through HALA upon hire and maintain certification at all times in accordance with state and regulatory requirements. (Effective 1/1/2026)
  • Obtain Nursing Assistant - Registered (NAR) within the first 6 months of hire date (Effective 1/1/2026)
  • All positions and shifts are awake - sleeping is not an option under any circumstance.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to actively support individuals in home and community settings, including standing, walking, and navigating varied environments throughout the shift
  • Ability to lift, transfer, and physically assist individuals using proper body mechanics and equipment, including lifting up to 50 pounds and more in emergency situations
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and maneuver mobility equipment (e.g., wheelchairs) in residential environments
  • Ability to provide hands-on personal care and respond to emergencies, including assisting with ADLs and rapid physical response when needed
  • All positions and shifts are awake - sleeping is not an option under any circumstance.

Harbor Alternate Living Association (HALA) – Established in 1980, HALA is a nonprofit that helps adults with developmental disabilities build independent living skills and integrate into the broader community. Based in Grays Harbor County, HALA empowers each person to recognize their strengths and live independently by providing person‑centered support across multiple domains.

Services and impact. HALA’s core “Circle of Support” includes Supported Living, Community Guide and Engagement, Crisis Prevention and Stabilization, Specialized Habilitation, and Staff & Family Consultation. The organization tailors services to each individual’s abilities, offering help with health care, money management, home management, nutrition, safety, self‑advocacy, and social relationships. HALA also provides training for long‑term care workers and offers CPR/First Aid and blood‑borne pathogens courses to staff and the public. All supports are delivered in integrated settings that encourage personal choice, full community access, and independence.
