General Description: 
This role involves professional responsibilities encompassing intricate work in loss prevention, occupational health, and safety. The position provides guidance, support, and consultation to government departments and public schools in Hanover County. The incumbent performs a range of duties related to safety programs, including hazard identification, risk mitigation, regulatory compliance, and loss prevention. Reporting to the Hanover County Safety and Risk Manager, the coordinator is also aligned with Hanover County Public Schools.
 
Organization: 
The Safety and Risk Management Coordinator position falls under Hanover County’s Career Development Program (CD), with three levels: SRM Coordinator 1, SRM Coordinator 2, and SRM Coordinator 3. Reporting to the Safety & Risk Manager, the position does not involve supervision of staff.
 
Essential Functions:
  • Establishes safety and risk as core values for both Hanover County Schools and Hanover County Government, aligning with the Hanover County Safety and Risk Value Statement.
  • Engages with government departments to foster a partnership for continuous improvement, ensuring clear understanding and adherence to safety and risk expectations.
  • Identifies best practices and continuous improvement initiatives, recommending them to relevant departments for reducing work process risks and enhancing safety practices.
  • Conducts inspections of facilities, job sites, and equipment to ensure compliance with safety regulations, identifying and resolving issues and hazards.
  • Undertakes accident investigations, determining causes, contributing factors, and assisting in the development and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Collaborates with schools to analyze potential risks within the County.
  • Develops, implements, and conducts safety training and awareness programs in consultation with the Safety and Risk Manager.
  • Assists in Workers' Compensation incident submission and manages claims for Workers' Compensation, property, and loss as directed by the Safety & Risk Manager.
  • Compiles and analyzes data to make recommendations for establishing or revising safety & risk programs and practices.
  • Monitors material, equipment usage, and the environment to determine hazard levels.
  • Oversees loss-control programs and activities for all county agencies and schools.
  • Leads and/or conducts job safety analyses on specific job functions to identify potential accidents or hazards.

Working Conditions:
  • Hazards: May come in contact with hazardous chemicals during workplace inspections; occasional exposure to adverse weather and contact with animals and insects during field investigations.
  • Environment: 40% office, 60% field.
  • Physical Effort: Minimal physical ability and stamina required for fieldwork.
  • Exempt status.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of safety administration, insurance, risk analysis, and OSHA principles and practices (required); applied knowledge in governmental operations (preferred).
  • Ability to conduct safety inspections, field investigations, recommend corrective actions, and effectively train others in safety & risk prevention methods.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
 
Education, Experience, and Training:
  • High School diploma or equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or training.
  • Higher levels on the Career Ladder require additional education and experience, or a bachelor’s degree in safety management, risk management, or a related field, with at least two years of experience in occupational safety and health, employee safety training, and the development of safety programs – OR – Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable.
 
Special Conditions:
  • Criminal Records Check, including fingerprinting.
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver’s License.
  • Twelve-month probationary period.
 

Salary : $56,351 - $68,000
