The General Manager will be responsible for overseeing wall panel operations during a period of growth and transition. Initially, responsibilities will span our existing Windham, ME operation and the planning and development of our new Oxford, ME facility, scheduled to open in early 2027. The balance of time between locations will evolve based on business needs, with the General Manager ultimately leading operations at the Oxford plant following its opening.

SUPERVISES: Components Manufacturing Team

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt


POSITION SUMMARY:

The General Manager leads a high-performing manufacturing team with full accountability for design, production, logistics, and financial performance, while advancing Hancock Lumber’s foundational mission: creating a work environment that recognizes employees as human beings and enhances the lives of the people who work there. This role is responsible for building and sustaining a safe, engaging, and empowering workplace where leadership is encouraged at every level, employee voices are respected and heard, and continuous improvement fuels both operational excellence and profitable growth.


The General Manager fosters clear, respectful, and proactive communication across Hancock Lumber yards, internal sales teams, and external partners—including fellow lumberyards and professional builders—supporting alignment, collaboration, and long-term relationships.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Safety & Risk Management

  • Lead a safety-first culture and ensure compliance with all safety programs, training, and regulations.
  • Drive injury prevention and effective return-to-work practices in partnership with corporate safety.

People Leadership & Engagement

  • Build, develop, and retain a high-performing manufacturing team.
  • Lead hiring, training, performance management, and succession planning.
  • Foster accountability, engagement, and clear communication across teams.
  • Clearly communicate vision, priorities, and expectations.
  • Build strong working relationships across the location and business.

Operations & Production Excellence

  • Oversee design coordination, production, and shipping to deliver quality products on time.
  • Align labor, equipment, materials, and schedules to meet production goals.
  • Drive continuous improvement, standardization, and operational efficiency.

Customer Experience

  • Ensure a strong customer experience from order through delivery.
  • Achieve OTIF targets and reduce defects, rework, and credits.
  • Support pricing, product availability, and systems that simplify doing business.

Financial Performance

  • Own full P&L responsibility for the operation.
  • Drive profitability through pricing, margin management, productivity, and cost control.
  • Manage inventory, working capital, overtime, and accounts receivable.

Performance Metrics & Accountability

  • Deliver results across safety, quality, OTIF, productivity, sales, margins, inventory, and ROA.
  • Use data and dashboards to monitor performance and guide decisions.

Systems, Technology & Compliance

  • Ensure adherence to company policies, procedures, and operating standards.
  • Coach teams on effective use of technology and support system adoption.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties as needed to support the success of the business.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to execute strategy and drive results.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective communicator with employees, customers, and leadership teams.
  • Ability to coach sales effectiveness and customer-focused thinking.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and enterprise manufacturing/ERP systems.

DESIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Proven leadership experience in manufacturing, components, construction or building materials operations.
  • Demonstrated experience managing people, processes, sales and financial performance.

REPETITIVE PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


  • Lift 60# from floor to waist, lift 40# from waist to shoulder.
  • Carry 60# over a distance exceeding 12 feet.
  • Push 60# in a wheeled cart.
  • Bend, stoop, or squat to floor level repeatedly.
  • Stand for long periods of time.
  • Sit for long periods of time.
  • Reach over head to grasp materials.
