What are the responsibilities and job description for the Diesel/Truck Mechanic and Shop Foreman position at Hampton County Government?
Hampton County is seeking an experienced Diesel Mechanic to maintain and repair County-owned vehicles and equipment, including heavy-duty and light-duty trucks, emergency vehicles, heavy equipment, and small engines.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose, service, and repair gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment
- Maintain fire apparatus, police vehicles, ambulances, graders, tractors, backhoes, generators, pumps, and small engines
- Perform preventive maintenance (oil changes, fluids, filters, lubrication, inspections)
- Repair engines, brakes, hydraulics, transmissions, electrical and emission systems
- Rebuild fire apparatus pumps and related equipment
- Perform welding, fabrication, plumbing, and electrical work as needed
- Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records
- Respond to after-hours and weekend on-call repairs
- Interact with County staff, firefighters, vendors, and the public
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum 3 years of experience repairing gasoline and diesel engines (or equivalent experience)
- Strong mechanical, electrical, and diagnostic skills
- South Carolina Driver's License is required (mechanic certifications a plus).
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 100 lbs and perform physically demanding work
- Ability to stand, kneel, climb, and work with hand and power tools
