The purpose of the School Nutrition Manager Trainee Program is to provide training through both hands-on experience and classroom instruction to prepare trainees for a potential management position in Hamilton County School Nutrition. The intent is to teach the standards of quantity school food production and service in accordance with USDA, State of Tennessee, and local program guidelines.

- Weekends, evenings, and school breaks off
- Hours that are compatible with student schedules
- On-the-job training
- Free meals
- Pay for internal applicants will be at their current rate of pay. Pay for external applicants will be based on education and experience.
- The second phase of training will run approximately from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with a 30-minute unpaid lunch, Monday through Thursday. Fridays will be a half day for ServSafe training and certification, if not currently certified at the Manager level.
- An applicant must commit to completing both phases of the program if phase one has been successfully completed.
- The completion of the course does not guarantee a management position with this department.
Minimum qualifications include:
- HS diploma or GED required
- Internal Applicants: a minimum of 1 year in a School Nutrition food service operation with 1-month main meat cook and cashiering experience, with a positive reference by the applicant's Cafeteria Manager
- External Applicants: a minimum of 1 year in food service management, with positive references
- A passing score on a basic math and reading comprehension test required
