Hale Makua Health Services is a Maui based non-profit that improves the well-being of those in its care through compassionate personalized health services. We are devoted to helping Maui's Elders live their best lives. Hale Makua's Kahului location is a 254-bed nursing facility.

The Position

Under general supervision, the Director of Human Resources provides executive leadership to transform HR into a strategic business partner that advances Hale Makua's mission, values, and strategic priorities. In collaboration with executive leadership, the Director of Human Resources develops and implements integrated people strategies that prepare the organization for sustainable growth, support workforce sustainability, and strengthen workforce development through effective talent planning, employee engagement, succession planning, and leadership and staff development. This position drives operational excellence, embeds innovation across HR practices, systems, and service delivery to build organizational capability and support long-term success while ensuring compliance.

  • Provides strategic HR leadership as a member of the Executive Leadership Team, aligning people strategies, workforce planning, policies, and HR operations with the organization's mission and long-term goals. Champions a culture of inclusion, innovation, collaboration, and operational excellence while optimizing workforce effectiveness and organizational performance.
  • Leads strategic workforce planning and talent management by analyzing current and future talent needs, workforce data, and labor budgets to build effective strategies for recruitment, development, retention, and succession. Develops strong talent pipelines, career pathways, and data-driven workforce initiatives to ensure the organization has the right talent to achieve its long-term goals.
  • Provides strategic leadership for total rewards programs, ensuring compensation, benefits, retirement, paid time off, disability, and payroll practices attract, engage, and retain top talent while aligning with organizational goals and values. Evaluates market trends, program effectiveness, compliance, and employee communication to continuously enhance the overall employee rewards experience.
  • Leads employee and labor relations strategies that foster engagement, accountability, retention, and a positive workplace culture through effective coaching, conflict resolution, performance management, and issue resolution. Provides strategic guidance on complex employee relations and labor matters, including investigations, collective bargaining, union negotiations, compliance with agreements, and proactive risk management.
  • Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Human Resources Department, ensuring efficient, mission-driven service delivery aligned with organizational strategy, compliance requirements, and employee needs. Leverages HR technology, workforce analytics, performance management, and continuous improvement practices to strengthen operational effectiveness, employee experience, and a culture of collaboration, trust, and innovation.
  • Leads and develops the HR team through effective hiring, onboarding, coaching, performance management, succession planning, and employee relations practices. Fosters a culture of accountability, compassion, collaboration, and excellence while strengthening employee engagement, leadership development, communication, and organizational performance across all sites.
  • Leads organizational transformation and performance excellence initiatives that drive continuous improvement, operational discipline, innovation, and high-reliability performance across Hale Makua. Champions change, interdisciplinary collaboration, and data-driven improvement strategies to enhance care quality, operational efficiency, staff engagement, and resident/patient experience while building a high-performing, learning organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, human resources, management, or other related discipline or equivalent combination of education, training and experience required
  • Master's degree in business administration, human resources, management, or other related discipline or equivalent combination of education, training and experience preferred
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in progressively responsible HR leadership, including at least 3 years in a senior management role.
  • Experience working with collective bargaining units
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulations and accreditation requirements.
