Responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in the pre-anesthesia and post-anesthesia.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assesses patient’s preoperative and postoperative status according to policies and procedures to include the patient’s
- Respiratory system and airway management needs,
- Cardiovascular system
- Neurological system
- Hemodynamic stability
- Pain and comfort needs
- Mental status
- Interprets information accurately from various noninvasive and invasive monitors.
- Has knowledge of various anesthesia techniques and surgical or procedural interventions.
- Applies scoring system for patient monitoring (eg, Aldrete Score, Modified Aldrete Score [ie, PARSAP].
- Develops an individualized perianesthesia plan of care.
- Implements the plan of care including the following interventions
- Monitored anesthesia care
- Regional
- General
- Local
- Communicating the patient’s current status throughout the perianesthesia continuum of care using SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation);
- Providing acute pain and comfort management as needed
- Administering medications correctly by implementing the 5 rights of safe medication practices (ie, right patient, right medication, right dose, right time, right route);
- Performing interventions to maintain the integrity of the patient’s wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels
- Performing interventions to maintain the status of the patient’s genitourinary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems, and fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances at or above baseline levels
- Performing interventions to ensure the patient is at or returned to normothermia at the conclusion of the immediate postoperative period
- Performing interventions to protect patient from infection
- Managing patient’s other co-morbid conditions as applicable
- Managing patient’s fluid as prescribed
- Assessing knowledge level of patient or designated support person and providing education regarding the expected psychosocial response, nutritional management, medication management, pain and comfort management, would management, and expected responses to the operative or invasive procedure
- Involving patient or designated support person actively in decisions affecting his or her perioperative plan of care
- Protecting patient’s rights, dignity, and privacy
- Providing age-specific, culturally competent, ethical care within legal standards of practice.
- Evaluates the patient’s progress toward attaining outcomes.
- Transfers care as needed.
- Delegates tasks according to the state Nurse Practice Act, and job descriptions.
- Documents nursing care completely, accurately, and legibly.
- Collaborates effectively with other disciplines as needed.
- Participates in quality review and performance improvement projects.
- Maintains required competencies.
- Acts as a patient advocate and maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.
- Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions; ensures compliance with Joint Commission and other external and internal regulatory agencies.
- Maintains the integrity of confidential patient information in accordance with HIPAA and hospital policy, including accessing, using and disclosing patient information relevant to the individual employee’s job duties. Also maintains confidentiality of other customers and hospital business affairs.
- Adheres to the standards of Magruder Hospital’s corporate compliance policies and seeks guidance and training when necessary to resolve questions about the policies. Reports violations in accordance with corporate compliance and organizational standards.

- Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
