Responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in the OR and other areas of perioperative services for all patient populations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Develops an individualized perioperative patient plan of care.
- Implements the plan of care by:
o Protecting the patient from injury caused by extraneous objects and chemical, electrical, laser, mechanical, and thermal sources
o Performing accounting procedures to protect the patient from unintended retained surgical items
o Performing interventions necessary to ensure that the patient’s procedure is performed on the correct site, side, and level
o Managing the patient’s specimens according to organizational policy and procedures
o Communicating the patient’s current status to relevant parties throughout the continuum of care; using SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation);
o Administering medications safely and correctly
o Performing interventions to maintain the status of the patient’s genitourinary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems and fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances at or above baseline levels
o Performing interventions to ensure the patient is at or returned to normothermia at the conclusion of the immediate postoperative period
o Performing interventions to protect the patient from surgical site infections
o Providing age-specific, culturally competent, ethical care within legal standards of practice
- Evaluates the patient’s progress toward attaining outcomes.
- Transfers care as applicable.
- Delegates tasks according to the state Nurse Practice Act and job descriptions.
- Documents nursing care accurately, completely, timely, and legibly.
- Collaborates effectively with other disciplines as applicable.
- Participates in quality review and performance improvement projects.
- Maintains required competencies.
- Acts as a patient advocate and maintain privacy of individuals.
- Effectively assists anesthesiologist during induction, intubation, emergence, and placement of spinal, epidural, and IV access catheters.
- Effectively functions as a preceptor for peers and new employees.
- Able to perform all duties of the circulating nurse and able to effectively and efficiently anticipate and respond to the needs of the surgical team.
- Practices good aseptic technique according to AORN guidelines
- Demonstrates thorough knowledge of location, care, and safe operation of all surgical equipment, with particular focus on:
- Demonstrates thorough knowledge of location, care, and safe use of positioning equipment, especially:
- Demonstrates thorough knowledge of location of surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment.
- Consistently uses preference cards as a basis for case preparation and care planning.
- Always identifies the surgical patients and their procedures correctly:
- Demonstrates competence in preparing and cleaning of OR suites before and between cases and after terminal case.
- Demonstrates thorough knowledge of instrument processing, sterilization, and biological monitoring.

Evidences the knowledge and ability to assess and interpret data about the patient’s growth and development in order to identify each patient’s needs and provide the appropriate care, including age-related care, where appropriate.

- Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions; ensures compliance with Joint Commission and other external and internal regulatory agencies.
- Maintains the integrity of confidential patient information in accordance with HIPAA and hospital policy, including accessing, using and disclosing patient information relevant to the individual employee’s job duties. Also maintains confidentiality of other customers and hospital business affairs.
- Adheres to the standards of Magruder Hospital’s corporate compliance policies and seeks guidance and training when necessary to resolve questions about the policies. Reports violations in accordance with corporate compliance and organizational standards.

- Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.

- Diploma or Associate’s Degree from an accredited school of nursing
- Current registered nurse license in Ohio
- Minimum 1 year nursing experience in hospital setting
- Prefer at least one year of perioperative nursing experience within the past two years; scrub and/or circulating experience
- Good communication skills
- Good organization skills
- Ability to remain calm in emergency situations
- Computer skills with electronic medical record (EMR)
- Able to function in a physically demanding, high-stress environment
- Working irregular hours including call
- Physical stamina
- Excellent assessment skills
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited school of nursing
- Effectively functions as a preceptor for peers and new employees
- Self-motivated and directed
Certifications and Licenses Requirements:
- Current RN license by the State of Ohio
- Current BLS, ACLS, PALS* Certifications
- BLS certification is required upon hire. ACLS & PALS certifications are required to be achieved as soon as possible but not later than six (6) months after hire date. All certifications required in this job description must be maintained by the employee throughout their employment.
Preferred:
- CNOR certification
- GI Scope certification
