Under general supervision, patrolling along the beach; enforcing local city ordinances related to the beach and waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Work requires employee to establish and maintain effective working relationships with homeowners, rental agencies, and visitors to the area, the general public, and various city departments. Must be able to deal tactfully and diplomatically in adverse situations. Work is subject to varying posts and job assignments and requires a flexible work schedule including weekends, holidays, and special events as determined by job duties.
Enforces City Code of Ordinances related to beach by patrolling the beach ensuring the ordinances are being adhered to and monitoring the cleanliness of the beach.

Prepares, reviews and/or submits various documents including reports related to applicable incidents.

Provides information to and communicates with immediate supervisor, other department supervisors, co-workers, subordinates, other City personnel, other law enforcement agencies, emergency response department/agencies, court personnel, attorneys, suspects, victims, witnesses, complainants, business/property owners, civic/community organizations, and the general public.

Responds to emergency calls and/or public calls for assistance.

Assists with emergency rescue activities as needed.

Attends required training courses and seminars; participates in required physical fitness activities.

Maintains assigned equipment and vehicles; inspects vehicles and equipment to insure proper working order.

Provides assist to beach patrons with lifting and moving equipment and personnel onto and off of the beach as needed.
Education and Experience:
High School Education or equivalent is desirable
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Driver’s License Current CPR Card
IMPORTANT JOB FUNCTIONS:
Proactively monitors littering violations on the beach within the City of Gulf Shores.
Prepares or completes various forms, letters, reports, correspondence, or other documents when required.
Performs other related duties as assigned and those duties directed by the Battalion Chief of Beach Rescue or his designated representative.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
All applicable state, federal and local ordinances, laws, rules and regulations.
First Aid procedures and equipment.
An understanding of beach characteristics, ordinances, policies and procedures
Departmental policies and standard operating procedures.
Public relations techniques for handling various beach littering calls for service or complaints.
Lifeguarding methods, practices, procedures and techniques and apply this knowledge to specific situations.
All computer applications and hardware related to performance of the essential functions of the job.
Department organization, standard operating guidelines and policies, rules, and regulations.
Skill in:
Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.
Learn job related material primarily through oral instruction and observation to effectively perform job duties.
Preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials when required.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth.
Communicating effectively and efficiently orally and in writing with the general public, and other departmental personnel in order to give and receive information in a courteous manner.
Operating and maintaining all assigned equipment required to perform the essential functions of the job.
Using tact, discretion, initiative, and independent judgment within established guidelines.
Organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up on assignments with a minimum of direction.
Applying logical thinking to solve problems or accomplish tasks; to understand, interpret and communicate complicated policies, procedures and protocols.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is routinely exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
Exposure to unknown and dangerous conditions such as intoxicated or violent individuals and life threatening situation.
Occasional exposure of work time to communicable and infectious diseases.
Working time may require irregular hours and shift times.
The incumbent's working conditions are typically moderately quiet.
At emergency scene, the incumbent's working conditions may be moderately loud.
Work requires frequent physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching, or similar activities, recurring lifting of moderately heavy items.
