About the Opportunity
We are seeking a motivated, results-driven Patient Financial Advocate to join a behavioral healthcare organization specializing in addiction recovery.
This role focuses on communicating directly with patients and families to explain financial responsibility for treatment, collect outstanding balances, and establish payment arrangements. The ideal candidate has a background in behavioral healthcare admissions, understands insurance benefits and verification of benefits (VOB), and is confident navigating difficult financial conversations.
We are looking for someone who is assertive, persistent, and comfortable asking for payment while remaining compassionate toward patients and families navigating addiction recovery. This is a patient-facing collections role, not a traditional insurance billing or insurance collections position.
Key Responsibilities
- Contact patients and families directly to discuss outstanding balances and financial responsibility for treatment.
- Explain deductibles, copays, coinsurance, out-of-pocket maximums, and other patient financial obligations.
- Review insurance benefits and verification of benefits to help determine patient responsibility.
- Follow up on outstanding balances, request payments, overcome objections, and negotiate payment arrangements.
- Address accounts that become self-pay due to terminated or inactive insurance coverage.
- Maintain consistent follow-up on payment commitments and delinquent accounts.
- Resolve patient billing questions and payment discrepancies in coordination with internal teams.
- Accurately document account activity, conversations, and payment arrangements in company systems.
- Protect confidential patient information and comply with HIPAA and applicable regulations.
Qualifications
- Prior experience in behavioral healthcare, substance use disorder treatment, or addiction recovery.
- Previous admissions or intake experience in a healthcare or behavioral healthcare setting.
- Strong understanding of insurance benefits and verification of benefits (VOB).
- Experience discussing patient financial responsibility, collecting payments, or negotiating payment arrangements.
- Confident communication, negotiation, and objection-handling skills.
- Ability to be persistent and results-oriented while maintaining empathy and professionalism.
- Strong organization, follow-through, and computer skills.
- Ability to work on-site in Delray Beach, FL, and accommodate the required evening shifts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in patient collections, back-end billing, or patient financial services.
- Experience with Kipu, Salesforce, and/or CollaborateMD (CollabMD).
- Background in high-volume admissions or call center environments.
- Experience working toward monthly collection goals, performance metrics, or incentive-based compensation.
Compensation and Benefits
- Base salary of $55,000–$65,000, with flexibility depending on experience.
- 4% commission on patient responsibility and 1% commission on pay-to-patient collections, as defined by the company's compensation plan.
- Tiered monthly performance bonuses, including a $250 bonus for meeting monthly goals and additional incentives for exceeding targets.
- Substantial earning potential based on individual performance.
- Health, dental, and vision insurance.
- 401(k) and paid time off (PTO).
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is comfortable taking ownership of financial conversations, directly asking for payment, and following through until balances are resolved. They understand the financial realities of treatment, can confidently overcome objections, and know how to balance accountability with compassion.
If you have behavioral healthcare admissions experience, understand insurance benefits, and are motivated by measurable results, this opportunity offers the chance to make a meaningful impact while earning performance-based compensation.
