Job Summary:
The Grossing Technician performs technical functions to support the Anatomic Pathology department by preparing, examining, and processing surgical specimens for histologic evaluation. The role ensures quality, accuracy, and compliance with CLIA and CAP standards while assisting pathologists and maintaining specimen integrity.

The role ensures quality, accuracy, and compliance with CLIA and CAP standards while assisting pathologists and maintaining specimen integrity.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform both routine and non-routine activities involved in preparing surgical specimens for histologic processing in compliance with lab procedures.
- Accession and label specimens accurately to ensure patient and sample integrity.
- Describe gross anatomic features of uncomplicated surgical specimens and escalate complex cases to Pathologist Assistants.
- Record measurements, weights, and findings for each specimen.
- Dissect and prepare surgical tissues for histologic processing.
- Maintain quality control, safety, and compliance with CLIA and CAP regulations.
- Interact directly with pathologists for specimen supervision and gross dissection support.
- Identify and resolve issues affecting specimen processing or promptly escalate to supervisors.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area while adhering to all laboratory safety policies.
- Complete all associated documentation accurately and on time.
Required Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline.
- Completion of required coursework:
- 6 credit hours in Chemistry
- 6 credit hours in Biology
- 24 combined credit hours in areas such as Biochemistry, Microbiology, Physiology, or Organic Chemistry.
- 3 months to 1 year of experience in Histology or Surgical Grossing preferred.
- Must meet requirements under CLIA CFR 493.1489 and corporate Minimum Qualifications for Personnel Performing Tissue Gross Examinations SOP.
- NYS qualification to gross and Histotechnician credentials preferred.
Nice-to-Have Experience:
- Prior experience in clinical or hospital pathology labs.
- Familiarity with embedding, microtomy, and staining processes.
- Knowledge of lab safety and quality assurance standards.
