Director of Mechanical Engineering – Data Centers (Expressions of Interest)

We are seeking expressions of interest for a Director of Mechanical Engineering, modeled on an executive-level technical role with a high-growth national data center developer expanding its thermal management and cooling capabilities at scale. The business develops multi-megawatt and gigawatt hyperscale data center campuses across key U.S. markets, and is at a stage of growth where next-generation thermal design, high-density liquid cooling, and mechanical efficiency (PUE/WUE) are core drivers of portfolio value and deployment velocity.
What the Director of Mechanical Engineering would do:
- Set Thermal Strategy: Lead the national mechanical engineering vision, establishing standardized basis of design (BOD) frameworks across chilled water loops, air handler systems, and liquid cooling architectures.
- Drive Cooling Innovation: Serve as the primary subject matter expert on direct-to-chip (D2C), immersion cooling, and high-density thermal management supporting next-gen AI workloads.
- Manage Engineering Partners: Direct external mechanical engineering firms and consultants from schematic design through Issued for Construction (IFC) package sign-off.
- OFCI & Equipment Strategy: Partner with procurement to evaluate, select, and conduct Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) for long-lead mechanical gear (chillers, CRAHs/AHUs, cooling towers, CDUs).
- Cross-Functional Alignment: Collaborate with commissioning agents and operations teams to validate L1–L5 mechanical testing, CFD modeling, and site turnover processes.
Who You Are
- 8 years of progressive mechanical engineering leadership on the owner, developer, or lead consultant side of multi-megawatt data center programs.
- Deep technical command of hydronic systems, psychrometrics, CFD analysis, and high-density thermal topologies.
- In-depth knowledge of ASHRAE TC 9.9 thermal guidelines, energy standards (ASHRAE 90.4), and Uptime Tier III/IV mechanical requirements (Active PE license strongly preferred).
- Proven track record of evaluating and deploying innovative liquid cooling topologies for high-kW density server environments.
- Strong leadership presence to represent the developer's mechanical strategy with hyperscale clients, OEMs, and internal executive teams.
