What are the responsibilities and job description for the Project Manager - Substation & Transmission position at Gridco?
Gridco, Inc. is a utility contractor and engineering services company serving investor-owned utilities, electric cooperatives, and municipal power authorities across the Southeast. We deliver end-to-end substation construction, distribution and transmission line builds — from front-end planning through energization and closeout.
We're hiring a Project Manager to own the full lifecycle of $10M substation and transmission projects across the southeastern United States. You'll be the single point of accountability from bid through final close — managing scope, schedule, cost, quality, safety, and client relationships on complex capital programs.
This is not a desk job. You'll spend real time in the field with foremen and superintendents, and you'll be equally comfortable presenting project financials to utility executives and our internal leadership team.
What You'll Build:
- Greenfield substations and substation expansions/upgrades
- Transmission line construction (69kV–500kV)
- Protection & control system installations
Responsibilities:
- Lead all phases of substation and transmission projects from pre-construction through energization, warranty, and financial closeout on programs valued at $10M
- Develop and maintain project schedules, work breakdown structures, and resource-loaded plans; drive milestone accountability across internal crews and subcontractors
- Own project budgets and forecasts — track costs against WIP, manage change orders, and report earned value, margin, and cash flow on a weekly/monthly cadence
- Manage procurement of long-lead materials (transformers, breakers, steel, conductor) and protect the critical path
- Serve as primary client contact for utility owners, engineers of record, and cooperative stakeholders
- Partner with field superintendents and foremen on crew deployment, equipment mobilization, and daily production targets
- Enforce OSHA, NESC, and client-specific safety standards on every site, every day
- Support business development including bid preparation, proposal writing, and scope reviews
- Drive closeout — punch lists, commissioning support, final invoicing, retention collection, and lessons learned
Qualifications:
- 5 years of project management experience in electrical utility construction with direct substation and/or transmission responsibility
- Demonstrated track record managing $10M projects through full lifecycle delivery
- Strong understanding of substation civil, structural, electrical, and protection & control scopes
- Fluency in one-line diagrams, plan/profile drawings, grounding plans, and relay coordination studies
- Proficiency with PM software or MS Project, cost tracking, and earned value reporting a plus
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred — equivalent field experience considered
- PMP certification is a plus
- Willingness to travel 30–50% across the Southeast
What We Offer:
- Competitive base salary project-based performance incentives tied to margin and schedule
- Company vehicle or vehicle allowance
- Comprehensive benefits: medical, dental, vision, 401(k) with match
- Modern systems: Viewpoint Vista ERP, Microsoft 365, Ramp
- A leadership team that understands field operations and respects the people who deliver the work
- A real seat at the table — Gridco is growing, and PMs here shape how we bid, build, and win
