Safety Technician – Heavy Civil & Mission Critical Projects

Location: Project-Based | Extensive Travel Required
Employment Type: Full-Time
Company: Gregory Construction

Position Overview

Gregory Construction is seeking an experienced Safety Technician to support our growing portfolio of heavy civil and mission-critical construction projects.

This is a field-based, travel-intensive position for a safety professional who is comfortable working directly alongside field crews and project leadership. The Safety Technician will maintain a strong presence in the field, identify and address hazards, support safe work planning, reinforce project safety expectations, and help ensure work is performed safely and in accordance with company, client, and regulatory requirements.

Gregory Construction self-performs heavy civil scopes including mass earthwork, grading, excavation, underground wet and dry utilities, duct banks, concrete, and related site development work on large-scale mission-critical and data center projects.

Candidates must be comfortable working in active construction environments and traveling or relocating between project sites based on operational needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation and ongoing execution of Site-Specific Safety Plans (SSSPs) and project safety requirements.
  • Maintain a consistent field presence and work directly with craft employees, Foremen, Superintendents, Project Managers, and other project leadership.
  • Conduct routine jobsite safety inspections, observations, hazard assessments, and audits.
  • Identify unsafe conditions and behaviors and work with field leadership to implement timely corrective actions.
  • Participate in pre-task planning, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs/JSAs), Task Hazard Analyses (THAs), toolbox talks, and daily safety meetings.
  • Review upcoming work activities with field leadership to identify potential hazards and appropriate controls before work begins.
  • Monitor high-risk construction activities including excavation and trenching, underground utility installation, heavy equipment operations, lifting and rigging, fall protection, confined spaces, and concrete operations.
  • Verify appropriate protective systems, access and egress, barricades, PPE, equipment practices, and other required safety controls are in place.
  • Exercise Stop Work Authority when an unsafe condition or activity presents an immediate risk to employees or the project.
  • Assist with incident, injury, near-miss, and property-damage investigations, including root cause identification, documentation, and corrective action follow-through.
  • Support new-hire safety orientations, toolbox talks, project-specific training, and ongoing field safety education.
  • Maintain accurate and timely safety documentation, inspection records, training records, incident reports, and other required project files.
  • Help ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, client requirements, Gregory Construction safety policies, and project-specific safety standards.
  • Build strong relationships with field employees while reinforcing accountability and ownership of safe work practices.
  • Travel extensively and support Gregory Construction projects across multiple regions based on project and business needs.

Qualifications

Experience

  • 3–5 years of construction safety experience preferred.
  • Heavy civil, underground utility, civil infrastructure, industrial, or mission-critical construction experience strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA construction standards and general construction safety practices.
  • Experience supporting field operations involving excavation, trenching, underground utilities, heavy equipment, fall protection, and other heavy civil activities strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize hazards and recommend practical corrective actions in active construction environments.

Certifications

  • OSHA 30 required.
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred.
  • CHST, GSP, CSP, or similar recognized safety credential strongly preferred.
  • Additional excavation/trenching, competent person, confined space, or construction safety training is a plus.

Education & Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Degree or additional education in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Construction Management, or a related field preferred but not required.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with craft professionals, Foremen, Superintendents, Project Managers, and client representatives.
  • Comfortable addressing unsafe conditions and holding others accountable in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate safety documentation.
  • Ability to work effectively in fast-paced, changing construction environments.

Travel & Work Environment

This is a project-based position with extensive travel required. Candidates should expect to spend the majority of their time on active construction sites and may be assigned to projects in different states or regions as operational needs change.

This position requires:

  • Extended assignments near active project sites.
  • Regular outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Daily interaction with field crews and heavy construction operations.
  • Ability to walk active jobsites and work around excavation, heavy equipment, utilities, concrete operations, and changing site conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Flexibility to travel or transition between projects as work is completed and new projects begin.

Candidates seeking a primarily office-based or low-travel safety position will not be the best fit for this opportunity.

What Success Looks Like

Successful Safety Technicians at Gregory Construction are visible, approachable, and actively engaged in the field. They do more than identify safety issues after the fact. They work alongside operations to recognize hazards early, plan work safely, and help prevent incidents before they occur.

The right individual will be able to earn credibility with field crews and leadership, communicate expectations clearly, speak up when something is unsafe, and hold others accountable while maintaining strong working relationships.

Compensation & Benefits

Gregory Construction offers a competitive compensation and benefits package, including:

  • Competitive pay based on experience and qualifications.
  • Health and dental insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO).
  • Company-supported travel accommodations for eligible project assignments.
  • Opportunities for continued safety training, certifications, and career advancement.
