What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cold Weather Shelter Monitor position at Grassroots Crisis Intervention?
Grassroots has openings for Cold Weather Shelter (CWS) Monitor PT who provides on-site supervision of CWS operations, including monitoring guest attendance and behavior, set up and take down of facilities, coordinating with volunteers in provision of all aspects of shelter services. We are seeking up to two support staff to split the days/shifts each week.
This position is seasonal working throughout the week beginning December 1st, 2025 – March 27th, 2026.
Staff coverage will encompass the full 7-day week:
- Sunday; 3:00pm – 11:00pm
- Monday; 3:00pm – 11:00pm
- Tuesday: 3:00pm – 11:00pm
- Wednesday: 3:00pm – 11:00pm
- Thursday: 3:00pm – 11:00pm
- Friday: 3:00pm – 11:00pm
- Saturday: 3:00pm – 11:00pm
Education and Experience:
- AA degree or G.E.D. is required.
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited school in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling preferred.
- Experience working with homeless population desired.
- Knowledge of mental health, crisis intervention and substance abuse concerns.
- Extensive experience working with homeless may be substituted for educational requirement.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Monitors guest attendance and behavior, maintaining awareness of guests’ adherence to CWS rules.
- Collaborates with volunteers to coordinate provision of meals and any other services provided by host congregations.
- Re-directs guests who display conduct or language which are unacceptable in the shelter setting.
- Does intake for new guests and maintains daily records for each guest.
- Takes lead in responding to disruptive behaviors or medical emergencies of guests.
- Works to create a safe, calm environment for all guests.
- Completes set up and break down of facilities shared space, cleans area, and prepare the area for use by next occupying program; to include but not limited to, laundry duties, moving furniture, sanitizing restrooms, gathering supplies and relocating to storage area.
- Completes shift reports and communicates with other CWS staff and CWS Manager to maintain continuity of service.
Agency-wide Responsibilities:
- Reads 100% of all email communications and responds to emails in a timely manner prior or during their shifts.
- Participates in supervision, in-service training, and staff meetings.
- Maintains good working relationships with co-workers and positively contributes to group morale.
- Completes all administrative duties including time sheets, leave requests, etc.
- Participates in special task forces, committees, or special projects as needed.
- Uses appropriate channels of communication to resolve conflicts with other staff.
- Interacts with staff, clients, and visitors in a professional and courteous manner.
Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Empathy and compassion.
- Understanding of mental illness, substance abuse and homeless issues desired.
- Must have valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Work Conditions include:
- Performing walk-through to monitor guests.
- Hours include overnights, weekends, and holidays.
- This is an emergency shelter and staff attendance are required in inclement weather.

Pay: $20.00 per hour
