This position provides a variety of clerical and administrative support for the department. The employee performs routine to moderately complex office duties requiring knowledge of departmental procedures, services, and local environmental programs.
You’ll be responsible for:
-Greeting visitors and providing information to the public
-Maintaining accurate records and files
-Assisting staff with data entry and document preparation
Work requires strong attention to detail, excellent customer service, and the ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
Performance is evaluated through observation, conferences, and the quality and timeliness of completed assignments.
Essential Duties
- Greets visitors and answers telephone inquiries; provides information about department programs and services or directs callers to the appropriate staff.
- Assists with preparing correspondence, reports, and forms from handwritten notes or verbal instructions.
- Processes incoming and outgoing mail; scans, files, copies, and organizes records and documents.
- Enters data into spreadsheets and databases; ensures information is accurate and up to date.
- Maintains organized filing systems for departmental records, permits, and reports.
- Assists with scheduling appointments, meetings, and inspections as needed.
- Provides courteous and professional customer service to residents, vendors, and staff.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to support departmental operations.
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and basic database systems.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to interact effectively with the public and coworkers.
- Ability to perform detail-oriented tasks and maintain accurate records.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize assignments, and meet deadlines.
- Familiarity with county or environmental service programs is a plus.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or GED, supplemented by business or administrative coursework.
- Some clerical or office support experience preferred; experience in a government or natural resources setting is desirable.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
Required Certifications
- May require a Notary Public certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
