Grand Isle Supervisory Union (GISU)

GISU is seeking an experienced, strategic, and collaborative Director of Human Resources to lead and manage all human resource functions across our Supervisory Union. Reporting directly to the Superintendent, the Director of HR is a key member of the administrative team, responsible for developing and implementing HR strategies that align with our educational goals, support our employees, and ensure compliance with all federal and state regulations, particularly those unique to Vermont's public education sector.
Key Responsibilities:
- Employee Relations & Support: Serve as a resource for staff and administration on all HR-related matters, including conflict resolution, performance management, and disciplinary action, ensuring fair and consistent application of policies.
- Talent Acquisition & Management: Oversee the full recruitment cycle, including job postings, screening, interviewing, and onboarding for all positions (licensed, non-licensed, and administrative). Develop strategies for staff retention and succession planning.
- Compensation and Benefits: Administer and manage employee benefits programs, compensation structures, and payroll processes in coordination with the business office.
- Compliance & Policy: Ensure compliance with all federal and state labor laws, Vermont Agency of Education requirements, and GISU policies and procedures. Maintain and update employee handbooks and HR policies.
- Labor Relations: Manage labor relations, including participation in the collective bargaining process and interpretation of collective bargaining agreements for various employee units.
- Professional Development: Coordinate and facilitate HR-related staff training, including mandatory compliance training, new hire orientation, and professional growth opportunities for staff and administrators.
- Data Management: Maintain accurate and confidential HR records, employee files, and HR information systems.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- A minimum of 5-7 years of progressively responsible HR experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership/management role.
- Prior experience in a K-12 educational or public sector environment, especially with collective bargaining and Vermont labor laws, is highly desirable.
- SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification is a plus.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state employment law (FLSA, FMLA, ADA, VOSHA, etc.).
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion in all HR practices.
Compensation:
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. GISU offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plans (Vermont State Teachers’ Retirement System or Vermont Municipal Employees’ Retirement System), and generous paid leave.
